Here’s an update on library programs and services for September.

PROGRAMS
This month we are offering a Family Storytime program on Thursdays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am in the library. This program series will continue until October 12th. Children ages birth to five years are welcome to attend with their adult caregivers; however, most of the content will be targeted toward children 12-36 months since they make up the majority of our storytime group.

SERVICES
The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) recently started a subscription to BookFlix by Scholastic, which is a great resource for educators and parents. There are 125 pairings of videos and eBooks on various subjects including Animals and Nature, ABC’s and 1,2,3’s, and Family and Community. The videos are animated versions of classic and modern children’s picture books, e.g. Good Night, Gorilla and Is Your Mama a Llama? This is a great deal because normally these videos produced by Weston Woods cost about $50 each!

BookFlix offers an interactive reading experience that gives families an option to have books read aloud with the words highlighted on screen for beginning readers to follow. For teachers and homeschooling parents, there are lesson plans available for the various book pairings.

Want to try it out? Go to our website at https://www.librarieshawaii.org/ and click on the “Browse” tab, then select “Bookflix for kids” under the eBooks heading. If you have any trouble accessing BookFlix, please let Casey or Michelle know and they’d be happy to assist you.

Check out what's happening in August! Come to the Drop-in playtime for families with children 0-5 years on Thursday mornings from 9:30 am to 10:30 am in the program room. We have fun new-to-us play equipment and educational toys donated by the Hi`ilani Program that was formerly offered by Kamehameha Schools.
Please note that the library will be closed on Friday, August 18 in observance of the Statehood Day holiday.
If you are interested in checking out the library’s e-book collection, there’s a new app called Libby (by OverDrive) that makes browsing, downloading, and reading e-books very easy! Even if you are comfortable with using the current OverDrive app, you may still enjoy the user-friendliness of the Libby app.
Here’s a link to the OverDrive page on the library’s website: https://hawaii.overdrive.com/.
And here’s a link to a page introducing the new Libby app: https://meet.libbyapp.com/. There’s a brief video that gives you an overview of how it works.

It takes just a few taps to find and borrow a title. Libby has a ground-breaking ebook reader, and a beautiful audiobook player.
