The state Senate is still at work (7 p.m.) as we begin what will likely be many long days (and evenings) on the floor, now that committees are through meeting for this session. While waiting to see what the House does about the proposed income tax, the focus in our chamber has been on the budgets that need to be adopted before we adjourn March 12. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

You know what they say about reading the fine print -- the legislation to create a state income tax is a good example of why that's important. What a week... it began with a spotlight on the two initiatives submitted by the people, using the power reserved to them by our state constitution, and ended with a record number of Washingtonians opposing the majority's income-tax proposal, which conflicts with our state constitution. When the people submit an initiative to the Legislature, it's the equivalent of them filing a bill (in the online bill tracker it even shows "the people of Washington" listed as the sponsor). Our state constitution says initiatives take precedence over any other piece of legislation except budget bills. But is that happening?
