Tonight’s training is how to efficiently and effectively fight wild fires. We are lucky enough to have one of our members, Cam Mills, who was a wild land firefighter out West. He shared the best practices for fighting wild fires so we are prepared as we head into the spring.

Yesterday some of our firefighters spent their Saturday training hard to get some real hands on experience. We want to thank Waterbury Vermont Fire Department for reaching out and inviting us to participate in this amazing opportunity.

Tonight we had a rare opportunity to use a house, that’s unfamiliar to us, to practice search and rescue, fire attack and the different components at an active fire scene. We used our fake smoke and dummy to simulate a situation where someone is stuck in the building and there is active fire. We ran through the scenario more than once and our firefighters practiced different roles. We learned from situations that didn’t go according to plan and we were able to talk through each scenario to assess what went right and what we would do differently in the future. A big thank you to the home owner for the opportunity!

Tonight's training was all about airpack confidence. Knowing your SCBA inside and out can make a huge difference when problems occur. Firefighters practiced taking on and off their airpack while blindfolded, as well as locating every clip, hose, and strap blindfolded. Refreshers like these can help mentally prepare a firefighter if something goes wrong with an airpack in a fire.

Tonight’s training was stopping the bleed and fist aid skills. You never know when we may run into a situation where we need to provide some initial first aid either for a fellow firefighter or community members. Thank you Mad River Valley Ambulance Service for taking the time to come to our station and teach us proper ways to stop bleeding and other important first aid information that is important for firefighters to know.

Training this month:

Last Wednesday we took a recertification course for CPR. Thank you to Mad River Valley Ambulance Service for helping us keep up to date!

Tonight we are looking at our gas meter and thermal imagining cameras in more depth so we are all prepared if they need to be used during an emergency situation.

We would like to take the time to thank the creators of the Men of the Mad River Valley calendar and all those who helped make it possible to donate some of the proceeds to the Waitsfield-Fayston Fire Department. We greatly appreciate the amazing support.

Ice is on the way tonight, please stay off the roads if possible. Morning commute may also be dangerous so be mindful of road conditions. If you see downed power lines in the road way, report them and find an alternative route. NEVER drive over a power line. Stay safe 🚨🚨🚨

Last weekend was another great Christmas party at the station together with family. It is always great spending time together when we are not on a training or emergency.

Thank you Bruce Hyde and all of Mehurons for supplying the amazing food!

Tonight’s training was a mutual training with Warren Vol. Fire Dept. We worked together to conduct search and rescue and set up water supply with our different trucks. We took tours of each others trucks and equippment so we can become familiar with the different components. We even got to check out Warrens ladder truck in action which is not a truck type that we have. It is always great when we can train with our neighboring departments because they will be the first ones we call when we are in need of extra help!
