Meet Brian Harrell, Wake Forest Center for Active Aging’s new director

WAKE FOREST, NC – Following an exhaustive search, the Town of Wake Forest is pleased to announce Brian Harrell (photo attached) as the new Director of the Wake Forest Center for Active Aging (WFCAA). His first day was Monday, June 8.

As WFCAA Director, Brian is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the WFCAA, advancing its mission to enhance the lives of older adults in the Wake Forest community. He will lead efforts to foster innovation, inclusion, and excellence in aging services while cultivating strong partnerships with local, regional, and statewide stakeholders. His leadership will guide the center’s growth, ensure alignment with Town goals, and create meaningful, wellness-focused experiences for older adults.

Born and raised in Greenville, NC, Brian graduated from East Carolina University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation. In 2014 he earned a master’s in public administration from Villanova University.

Brian’s professional career began in 2006 as a Recreation Assistant with the City of Greenville where he developed and implemented special population programs and managed Special Olympics.

In 2008 he began working with the City of Rocky Mount as a Community Recreation Manager. Over the next nine years he managed several community centers, summer youth programs, afterschool programs, special populations programs, and Special Olympics programming. From 2017-2026 he served as Senior Center Manager where he directed the Rocky Mount Senior Center and its grant management program, along with its National Council on Aging Senior Center Accreditation program and outdoor seasonal pool.

“Brian brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in parks, recreation, and senior services, including extensive experience managing active aging programs, staff, facilities, budgets, community partnerships, and strategic initiatives for the City of Rocky Mount,” said Assistant Town Manager Candace Davis.

“Throughout the recruitment and assessment process, Brian demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing quality of life for older adults, fostering inclusive and engaging programming, building collaborative partnerships, and supporting organizational excellence. His combination of municipal leadership experience, operational expertise, and public administration knowledge positions him well to lead the continued growth and evolution of WFCAA as a premier resource for older adults in the Wake Forest community.”

Brian is the proud father of Emmanuel, 23, Noah, 8, and Gabriel, 4, and two dogs – Maddy and Daisy. When he’s not working and spending time with his family, he enjoys participating in CrossFit and Hyrox races.

To reach Brian, call 919-554-4111 or email [email protected].

Just as they were during last month’s Friday Night on White (FNOW), Wake Forest Police officers will again be perched on the rooftops of a few downtown businesses during Friday’s concert.

The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) has requested and received permission from the property owners to position officers atop their businesses with rifles that do not “fire pepper balls.”

As we noted prior to the May 8 FNOW, the WFPD utilizes elevated positions to help ensure the safety of the thousands of people who choose every month to attend this downtown event.

This approach to public safety isn’t unique to FNOW, nor is it exclusive to WFPD. Law enforcement agencies around the world position officers atop buildings to secure high-ground advantage for surveillance, crowd management, and protection during popular events.

We’re proud that FNOW - which started in 2016 - is still going strong. In fact, judging by the attendance in April and May – it’s never been more popular!

We love the fact that so many people from across our community, region, and state enjoy FNOW – and why wouldn’t they?!?! They assemble in our charming downtown on the second Friday of each month from April through September to enjoy the very best bands, sample offerings from the best food trucks, visit with the best sponsors, and explore the very best downtown shops anywhere!

So, thank you to everyone who enjoys FNOW. We may produce the series, but you generate the incredible, exceptional energy that makes FNOW our area's most popular outdoor concert series.

If you live in and around Wake Forest, then you know the Town hosts dozens of events each year and every one of them presents its own array of challenges. As the Town’s most popular outdoor event, that’s especially true of FNOW.

That’s why after every concert, Town staff from every department that has a role in producing FNOW meet to discuss what went well and what can be improved.

We also send out event surveys to attendees, sponsors, and merchants requesting their feedback on their FNOW experience. As a result of these debriefings and the survey responses submitted, we have initiated several changes over the years in an effort to try and provide the best possible experience for everyone who chooses to attend.

During all that time one thing that hasn’t changed is the WFPD’s commitment to ensuring your safety.

So, thank you WFPD! We appreciate you and all you do.
