According to caregiver reports:

70% of children experienced emotional distress

Many struggled with grief, loss, and behavioral health challenges.

Families reported needing mental health counseling, family therapy, peer support groups, and camps.

We often talk about the injured responder.
We must also talk about the children at home.

Brain injury awareness means recognizing the ripple effects and ensuring support reaches the whole family.

In this caregiver-reported study of U.S. first responders with traumatic or catastrophic injuries:

89% of caregivers provided daily care
41% worked full-time while caregiving
Over half had been caregiving for 10+ years
33% reported burnout, emotional strain, and mental health challenges

Caregivers described the experience as “life-changing,” “horrific,” and “hopeless.”

Brain injury doesn’t just affect one person , it impacts the entire family system.
This Brain Injury Awareness Month, let’s recognize and support caregivers, too.
