Soldiers of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), utilize four unique ceremonial M17 Pistols during their solemn duty. The four pistols bear the names of Silence, Respect, Dignity and Perseverance.

Dignity and Perseverance represent Line 5 of the Sentinel's Creed. Silence and Respect represent the request of Tomb Guards to the public when visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The wood grips are made of wood from the U.S.S. Olympia. The U.S.S. Olympia carried the World War I Unknown from Europe to the United States in 1921.

The cocking serrations are engraved with XXI, 21 in roman numerals, signifying the twenty-one steps Tomb Guards take when walking the Tomb and honoring the Unknown Soldiers.

The sight plate contains an engraved impression of the three Greek figures on the front of the Tomb: Peace holding a dove, Victory holding palm branch and Valor holding a sword.

The sights on the ceremonial pistol are glass inserts made of marble dust from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The magazines hold 21 rounds and are engraved with the names of the three Greek figures on the front of the Tomb: Peace, Victory and Valor.

The serial numbers of the pistols are significant. "LS” represents Line Six of the Sentinel's Creed, "My standard will remain perfection.” “02JUL37" signifies the date the first 24-hour guard was posted at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The final number of “21” signifies the 21 steps Tomb Guards take when guarding the Tomb.

The serial numbers of the four ceremonial pistols are:
LS02JUL37A21 (Silence)
LS02JUL37B21 (Respect)
LS02JUL37C21 (Dignity)
LS02JUL37D21 (Perseverance)

In this time of uncertainty the leadership of NCVVI has decided to cancel the public ceremony at the State Capitol for April 2020. If allowed the membership will do a simple ceremony to keep the promise alive that none of our MIA's will be forgotten!

Thank you Sanford ALR 382 for your April commitment.

To our guest hosts, it has also come to our attention that a copy of our permit must be readily available during each ceremony. To that end we will put a copy if the permit in the blue binder in case you need it.

If you have any questions please let us know.

Stay safe and healthy!
