With a busy and hot(!!!) Independence Day weekend approaching, we'd like to take a minute to pass along some tips for a fun and safe holiday for everyone!
💚 Our park staff cannot control many things, including the weather, wait times, and if the park has filled to capacity. Please keep in mind that we are all people doing our best, and be kind!
🚫 The parks often fill in the middle of the day. If the park is full, we will not be allowing any entry until there are enough empty spaces to allow us to do it safely. Walk-in access is not allowed when the park is at capacity.
🌅 In order to have the best chance of being able to get into the park, plan your trip before 10am or after 6pm. Make sure you take everything you need when you come in so that you won't have to leave until you're ready to go for the day. If you leave early and the park fills, we won't be able to let you back in.
🚗 Please make sure you are only parking in designated parking spots. Parking is not allowed on the side of any road or highway.
☀️ Extreme temperatures are here! Make sure you bring plenty of water for you and your pets. Wear sun protection and know the signs of heat-related illnesses.
⚠️ Life jackets worn, nobody mourns! Wear it when you're out in the water – paddling, boating, and swimming. We have life jackets that are free for use at our swim beaches. Please help our staff out by returning them to the racks when you're finished with them.
🗑 Take care of your park! Make sure all trash gets put in its proper place.
With all of that in mind, stay safe and have a wonderful holiday! ⛱ See less

Yesterday, a member of the public posted to social media that they had tomorrow off and wanted to know if any other local folks wanted to join them in cleaning up an area at Falls Lake they love to recreate at.

Today, approximately a dozen people showed up and worked in the hot sun for a couple of hours and pulled about three pickup truck loads of trash from the shoreline and surrounding areas.

We can't say thanks enough! Volunteers, whether one person or a group, whether serving as an official campground host or just unofficially picking up trash for 30 minutes, are so vital to protecting our natural spaces and providing safe outdoor recreation to all our visitors. ❤️

Information about how to volunteer with North Carolina State Parks and Recreation can be found on our Volunteer page, including some upcoming volunteer opportunities at Falls Lake and many other different parks across the state:

We are still working through the construction phase of our project to upgrade our wastewater systems. During this construction, some bathrooms, facilities, and camping areas will be closed. Currently construction is progressing in Beaverdam, Rolling View, Holly Point, Shinleaf, and Highway 50, and BW Wells Recreation Areas.
Holly Point and Shinleaf are currently closed, all other areas are operating under their normal schedule but some bathrooms or facilities may be closed due to construction; portable toilets are available if bathrooms are closed. Closed facilities will be reopened once construction is completed in that area.
More information, including our 2026 operating schedule, updates on this project, maps, and more can be found on our website:

It’s ! Our staff were wearing their life jackets today, we challenge you to wear yours out on the water. Life jackets save lives when they’re worn. There are so many styles and colors - the best life jacket is the one you will wear!

Congratulations to our newest Rangers! Earlier this week, Rangers Davis and Atashi from Falls Lake and Ranger Davidson from Jordan Lake (he's new, we won't hold that against him) graduated from the Durham County Sheriff's Office 49th Basic Law Enforcement Academy. This training is over 1000 hours of classroom and practical exercises over the last six months. We are proud of them, and excited to have them back in the parks with us!

Last week we had the honor of wishing our longest tenured employee, Brian Grimes, farewell as he retired after almost 36 (!!!) years of service with the state. Mr. Grimes has been a fixture at Falls Lake long before construction was completed on many of our recreation areas. Throughout his time with North Carolina State Parks and Recreation, Mr. Grimes been a foundation in helping to maintain the places that allow our visitors to relax, renew, recreate, and recognize the importance of our natural spaces. At his retirement luncheon, Mr. Grimes reminded us all that while we don’t get into this profession to get rich, coming to work every day to work with like-minded people that want to make a difference makes the hard days worthwhile.

🫡Congratulations on your career! See the comments below ⬇⬇⬇ for some career stats!
