Wake Forest SWAT Team wins NC SWAT Competition

WAKE FOREST – After finishing second overall last year, the Wake Forest Police Department SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team earned top honors and won first place overall at last week’s 2026 NC Justice Academy SWAT Competition at The Range Complex in Autryville, NC. The Fayetteville Police Department and Raleigh Police Department finished second and third, respectively.

Nine teams gathered to test their skills over two days in a series of challenging scenarios designed to evaluate teamwork, precision, communication, and problem-solving under pressure.

The teams competed in a range of physical and tactical exercises, including a three-and-a-half-mile team run in full SWAT gear, marksmanship trials, and strength-based tasks such as moving sandbags, pulling sleds, and carrying kettlebells. The WFPD’s team took first place in five of the eight events.

The WFPD Swat Team will compete in two national competitions later this year.

Think before you drink and drive 🚗

The Wake Forest Police Department wants to remind drivers not to drive while under the influence.

“Driving under the influence is careless and reckless. It not only endangers the life of the driver, but it can also have deadly consequences for passengers and others on the road.” says Chief Jefferson.

Anyone convicted of DWI faces up to $13,500 in legal fees for a first offense, along with the suspension of their driver's license.

Make sure you plan ahead by calling a friend, using a rideshare app, or designating a sober driver.

In 2018 the Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) received international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA). The accreditation verifies that the WFPD meets CALEA’s industry best-practice standards and has attained public safety professional excellence.

In 2023, as part of a continuous effort to maintain its CALEA accreditation, the WFPD introduced a public portal for community comments at https://bit.ly/WFPDAccreditation.

The online portal is designed to receive comments regarding WFPD’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for maintaining its accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns, but the overall intent is to provide WFPD with information to support continuous improvement and foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

CALEA is not an investigatory body, so the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment to submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.
