Wakefield Environmental Sustainability Committee Our mission is to promote environmental sustainability in the town for all people in Wakefield.

The Town of Wakefield recognizes that sustainable environmental practices are critical to protecting and enhancing the ecological and economic health of our community and surrounding areas. Addressing environmental and energy issues, such as resource conservation, waste reduction and energy efficiency, can contribute to the well-being of the Town and its businesses, residents and ecosystems. This

committee will work with the Town Administrator, Town Departments, Boards, and Commissions to assist and advise on ways to encourage balanced and responsible environmental stewardship.

This Saturday! Melrose Urban Garden Tour!! Pre-tour gathering 8:30-11am, tour 10am-1pm.

The Melrose Urban Garden Tour showcases unique local gardens while supporting the Melrose Farmers’ Market and its SNAP Match Program. This self-guided tour highlights creative urban green spaces, from backyard retreats to container gardens. Proceeds benefit the SNAP Match program, doubling SNAP benefits at the market to provide fresh, local produce for families in need.

Friends of Lake Quannapowitt is back at it, cleaning up the shores of our beloved Lake Q. Sign up to help them remove invasive plants or pick up garbage. They welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities, for as long or as little as you want to help - many hands make light work! And for invasive removal, they'll show you exactly what plants to pull. Truly amazing work by a collective 35 volunteers over two weekends pulling up Garlic Mustard from the land around Crystal Lake. Together they filled 47 garbage bags with the invasive plant. Check out these before and after pics of the area. Amazing teamwork!

Great news gardeners - Grow Native is collecting garden center plastic pots for recycling - now through June 22nd - at the back of the church at 7 Harrington Rd Lexington. Even better news, Robin has volunteered to collect pots in Wakefield to bring to Lexington. Message ESC for her address to drop off, and bring them to her by evening of June 20. Hooray for recycling of garden pots (and yes, black plastic garden pots are welcome).
