Meet Our Law Enforcement Advocate, Alex! 💜

Pictured here is Alex alongside Officer LaFerriere of the South Kingstown Police Department after completing a Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Instructor Development Course together.

Our Law Enforcement Advocate works closely with police departments throughout Washington County to strengthen coordinated community responses to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. By building strong partnerships with law enforcement, we help ensure survivors are connected to compassionate support, resources, and advocacy when they need it most.

We're grateful for the dedication of Officer LaFerriere and our law enforcement partners as we work together to support survivors and build a safer community. 💜

Financial abuse is a common but often overlooked form of control in abusive relationships. By limiting access to money, employment, and essential resources, an abuser can make it incredibly difficult for someone to feel safe enough to leave.
Many survivors report that financial insecurity is one of the biggest barriers to ending an abusive relationship, especially when children are involved.

🛑 Tactics of Power and Control in Abusive Relationships 🛑
Abuse is about more than physical violence; it is rooted in power and control. Abusers use a range of tactics to maintain dominance over their partners, including:

🌀 Intimidation through looks, gestures, threats, or destroying property
🌀 Emotional abuse such as insults, humiliation, and mind games
🌀 Isolation by cutting off support systems and limiting outside contact
🌀 Minimizing, denying, and blaming to avoid responsibility and distort reality
🌀 Using children as leverage through guilt, threats, or manipulation
🌀 Using male privilege to assert authority or act as the sole decision-maker
🌀 Economic abuse by controlling finances or preventing employment
🌀 Coercion and threats that force compliance through fear of harm or consequences

🟣 These behaviors often work together to create a cycle of fear, control, and dependency.

Program Spotlight! When someone is experiencing domestic violence, having a safe place to turn can make all the difference. DVRC's Emergency Safe Shelter (Safe Home) meets survivors' critical needs by providing safe shelter, food, and other basic necessities. Every client is also offered access to our support services, including support groups, counseling, advocacy, and wrap-around case management to help them move toward safety and stability.
Our housing support doesn't end there. DVRC also offers Transitional Housing and Permanent Supportive Housing programs, providing survivors with additional opportunities to rebuild their lives and work toward long-term independence.

Safety planning is a proactive way to help protect yourself or someone you care about. Small steps can make a meaningful difference when navigating unsafe situations.

This checklist includes a few important considerations:

💜Memorize important numbers, including DVRC’s helpline
💜Identify safe places you can go if you need to leave quickly
💜Prepare an emergency bag with essentials like ID, keys, cash, medication, and documents
💜Choose a code word with someone you trust
💜Trust your instincts! If something feels unsafe, reach out for support
