FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 22, 2026

At 2:39 a.m. on May 22, 2026, the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department was paged to a reported structure fire at a multi-family dwelling within the city limits. Firefighters arrived on scene at approximately 2:45 a.m.

A total of 12 Wakefield firefighters responded to the incident. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Allen, Emerson, and Wayne Fire Departments. The Dixon County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.

Four occupants were safely removed from the residence. One individual was transported for medical treatment, while the remaining three occupants were treated on scene. Multiple animals were also safely rescued from the structure.

Firefighters were able to quickly confine the fire to the apartment of origin, helping to prevent further extension throughout the building. Smoke and water damage was sustained in other portions of the structure.

The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Chief Ulrich would like to express how proud he is of the coordinated efforts displayed by all responding personnel throughout the incident. The quick response, teamwork, and professionalism shown by firefighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel, and mutual aid departments helped bring the situation under control and ensured all occupants were safely evacuated.

The Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department would also like to thank all mutual aid agencies and responding personnel for their assistance and continued support.

We didn’t miss an opportunity to train!

Monday evening while on a “field trip” to the bi-monthly Mutual Aid meeting, members practiced their airway management skills. 8 members (7 EMTs) participated in the bus ride to Bancroft and didn’t let the time go to waste. Proper assessment of Andrew (our training dummy), precise placement of OPA’s, NPA’s, I-Gel’s, and manual ventilation were the highlights.

With fuel prices continuing to remain high, we will no longer be “fighting fire with fire” until further notice. The WVFD has reached an agreement with the City of Wakefield that allows us to use water from hydrants that have been conveniently placed throughout town.

Monday evening the WVFD conducted pumper training and experimented with the new technique of spraying water to extinguish fires. It appears we may have accidentally tapped into the plumbing for Ice Tea. Please bear with us as we learn these new techniques. We ask that the community keeps their structure fires to a minimum until these new skills are mastered.

Thank you for your cooperation.
