State Police are charging Gerald Bates, 46 with assault on a police officer, obstruction and resisting arrest after Charlestown Police responded to a noise complaint 10 p.m. last night at 31B Lauri Drive, Apt. B, Charlestown.

According to RI State Police the suspect avoided Charlestown Police as they approached his residence by locking the door and exiting by a rear window and fleeing into the ...woods. Thirty to 35 minutes later he returned to his residence and was encountered by Charlestown Police Department officers.

The Charlestown Police Department Officer gave a verbal command to Mr. Bates to get on the ground, but police allege that he did not comply and a physical struggle ensued, in which the police officer was struck in the head with a portable radio During the altercation the police officer discharged his weapon three times. The three rounds did not strike the suspect or the police officer. During the altercation, other members of the Charlestown Police Department responded. They deployed their department issued tasers in an effort to subdue Bates. He was tasered two times before he complied.

Bates was arraigned by The Honorable Mary E. McCaffrey, Associate Judge, in Fourth Division District Court, and released on $2,000 with surety bail. His next court date is March 20th for a pre-arraignment conference.See More

Registered voters who lack an acceptable current and valid Photo ID (such as a driver's license or state ID card) can get a free Voter ID. The Secretary of State's Mobile Unit will be at the South Kingstown Senior Center on Thursday, March 22nd from 9:30 a.m. to noon to issue free Voter ID cards. The Mobile Unit will also be at the Narragansett Community Center on Friday, March 23rd from 10 a.m. to noon, and at the Charlestown Senior Center on Tuesday, March 20th from 10 a.m. to noon. You must bring some ID with you such as a bank card, insurance card, public housing card, or student ID. If you have any questions, call the Town Clerk's Office at 789-9331, extension 1231.

RIDOT will hold a public meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, to discuss the proposed changes to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) fare and service schedule. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Atrium at the Rhode Island Department of Administration, One Capitol Hill, Providence. .

Facing a serious revenue shortfall, the MBTA has introduced a proposal
to increase fares by an average of 35 to 45 percent and to eliminate
service on many of its transit lines. In Rhode Island, this would affect
the Providence/Stoughton line, which provides commuter rail service to
Providence and T.F. Green Airport.

Snow predicted for tomorrow. The National Weather Service reports rain and snow, becoming all snow after 4pm. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. For Saturday night there is a chance of snow showers, mainly before 1am.
