Wakefield fire along with multiple other agencies participated in a training exercise at the Gogebic County Airport. The simulated fire was put out, passengers received medical care, hazmat was accounted for and the crews even found the donor heart that was on the plane and got it to the hospital in time. This all happened while keeping the airfield secure from the general public. Training events like this happen every three years and are always a great learning opportunity.

Wakefield Fire was dispatched for mutual aid at 11:07am to a reported processor fire in the wooded area off County Road 519 South.. Crews from Wakefield and Bessemer township Fire had multiple hand lines to keep the processor from spreading to the woods.

Damage: Extensive to the equipment

Cause of the fire is unknown

🔥INCIDENT REPORT🔥

Incident Type: Brush/Grass Fire
Location: Rydeski Rd, City of Wakefield
Date: August 2, 2026
Time of Page: 3:25PM
Time Cleared: 4:30PM

The Wakefield Fire Department was dispatched at 3:25PM to a reported brush/grass fire on Rydeski road unknown of size. Upon arrival, crews located approximately a 50’x50’ area of grass and brush actively burning.

Actions Taken:
Engine 5 established initial fire attack. Brush 7 supported the hand tools and Tanker 6 provided water supply support.

Damage:

* Approximately 50’x50’ area

Remarks:
The fire was contained and extinguished, and the scene was cleared at 4:30pm. Quick response by responding crews prevented further damage to the residence and surrounding wild land.

Our training tonight consisted of smoking up a room with a fog machine and conducting a search. With nearly zero visibility and high heat it is very challenging to search a house during a fire. Continued training in realistic conditions help us to get ready for the real thing. Thank you to Bessemer Township Fire Department for loaning us their fog machine and training dummy
