Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and one of the most common threats we face is phishing emails designed to trick you into sharing sensitive information or downloading malware.
It can happen to anyone. It only takes one click for someone to access your contacts or worse. To help keep our systems secure, here are the top 5 things to notice before you click:
1. Suspicious Sender Address: Don’t just look at the “Display Name.” Hover over the sender’s name to see the actual email address. If it looks like a string of random
characters or uses a misspelled domain (e.g., https://www.google.com/search?q=micros0ft.com instead of microsoft.com), it’s a red flag.
2. Urgent or Threatening Language: Phishers want you to act without thinking. Be wary of emails claiming your account will be “deleted” or “suspended”
unless you take immediate action.
3. Mismatched Hyperlinks: Before clicking any link, hover your mouse over it. A small box will appear showing the actual destination URL. If the link text says
“View Invoice” but the URL leads to a completely unrelated or suspicious website, do not click it.
4. Generic Greetings and Poor Grammar: Professional organizations usually address you by name. If an email starts with “Dear Customer” or “Valued Member”
and is filled with spelling errors or awkward phrasing, treat it with caution.
5. Requests for Sensitive Information: Legitimate companies (including our IT department) will never ask for your password, credit card number, or other personal
credentials via email.
What to do if you spot a suspicious email:
· Do not click any links or download any attachments.
· Do not reply to the sender.
· Report it: Use the “Report Phishing” button in your email client or forward it to our IT security team.
· If you’re not sure it came from the user, do not click on any links. Email the sender directly (do not clicking on reply).
