Mayor Dale White has proclaimed September 6–12, 2026, as National Su***de Prevention Week in the City of Wakefield.

National Su***de Prevention Week is an opportunity to increase awareness, strengthen meaningful connections, reduce stigma, and help ensure individuals and families know where support is available. Su***de prevention is a community effort, and each of us can play a role by recognizing when someone may need support and helping connect them with appropriate resources.

The City also recognizes the Range Su***de Prevention Council for its continued work to promote su***de prevention awareness throughout our region.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health, su***de, or substance-use crisis, the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call or text 988 to connect with help.

During National Su***de Prevention Week, we encourage residents to become familiar with available resources, support those who may be struggling, and help foster a community where seeking assistance is recognized as a sign of strength.

City of Wakefield offices will be closes Monday, September 7, 2026, in observation of Labor Day!!

Update 6:40 AM: Our team worked faster than expected, and we restored power at 4:48 City wide. If you remain without power, please contact the Gogebic County Sheriff.

Update 1:48 AM We have located the issue and are currently conducting repairs. Power restoration is estimated for 4:00 AM for all services except Peters Street. Restoration for Peters Street is anticipated to be completed by approximately 10:30 AM.

The City is aware of an isolated power outage impacting a limited number of services throughout the community. Services north of Sunday Lake, Charles Street, Peters, Ashlund, and the Putnam may be impacted. Our electrical team is currently investigating the cause of the outage.

Northwoods General Store & Coffee House has graciously offered to host this community conversation and provide a relaxed setting where residents, business and property owners, employees, and others can come together to talk about Wakefield’s future.

This is not a formal public hearing or presentation. It is an opportunity to sit down, have a conversation, share your thoughts and ideas, talk about opportunities and challenges, ask questions, and hear from others about what they would like to see for the future of our downtown and business corridors.

And since we’ll be gathering at one of our local businesses, grab a drink or an ice cream from Northwoods General Store & Coffee House while you’re there and join the conversation! Drinks and ice cream will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Supporting a strong downtown and strong business corridors also means supporting the local businesses that invest in our community every day. Whether you’re joining us on September 2 or simply out and about in Wakefield, we encourage everyone to shop local, eat local, and support the businesses that help make our community what it is.

Feedback gathered through the Downtown Development Survey and conversations like this will inform the Planning Commission’s long-term planning efforts and ultimately guide future priorities, projects, grant opportunities, and investment.

Everyone is welcome, and we hope you’ll join us. You do not need to be a business or property owner to participate. This conversation is open to residents, businesses, property owners, employees, and anyone interested in sharing their perspective on downtown Wakefield and the City’s business corridors.

📣 STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE WANTED!

The City of Wakefield Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is seeking a junior or senior from Wakefield Marenisco School to serve as a student representative and bring a student perspective to discussions about parks, recreation, and opportunities in our community.

The time commitment is manageable! The Board meets just six times per year, on the second Wednesday of odd-numbered months.

Interested students should submit:

• A brief letter of interest explaining why you would like to serve
• One reference

Applications should be emailed to [email protected] by September 8, 2026.

This is a great opportunity to get involved in your community, share your ideas, and help ensure that students have a voice in the future of parks and recreation in Wakefield.

The City of Wakefield has a long tradition of partnering with the American Red Cross and the Wakefield-Marenisco School District to host community blood drives. We are grateful to everyone who has donated over the years, and the City will continue to host blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross.

This year, we are also expanding our efforts by partnering with the UP Health System Regional Blood Center for our first community blood drive with the organization.

What makes this blood drive unique is that all blood donated through the UP Regional Blood Center stays right here in the Upper Peninsula, supplying blood to patients at all 12 U.P. hospitals.

That means your donation can directly help our neighbors, friends, family members, and fellow Yoopers when they need it most.

Since this is our first blood drive with the UP Regional Blood Center, we are hoping for a great turnout from the Wakefield community. If you are able to donate, please consider rolling up your sleeve and helping us make our first drive a success!
