๐Ÿšจ Air Quality Alert for Northern Ohio ๐Ÿšจ

Smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires has moved into Northern Ohio, resulting in poor air quality and heavy low-lying smoke across the region.

Individuals with asthma, COPD, heart disease, other respiratory conditions, older adults, young children, and anyone sensitive to poor air quality are encouraged to take extra precautions today.

Please consider the following:
โ€ข Stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows and doors closed.
โ€ข Limit outdoor activity and strenuous exercise.
โ€ข If you must be outside, consider wearing a well-fitted N95 mask.
โ€ข Keep rescue inhalers and other prescribed medications readily available.
โ€ข Monitor symptoms closely, including increased shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, or persistent coughing.

If you experience severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, or another medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

Stay informed by monitoring local air quality conditions and check on family members, friends, and neighbors who may be at higher risk.

Please stay safe and take precautions until air quality improves. ๐Ÿ’™

Today, we mourn the loss of Jeffery โ€œJeffโ€ Herman Sr.โ€”a dedicated paramedic, mentor, and respected member of the emergency services community.

For more than 29 years with North Central EMS, 22 years with Harris-Elmore Fire Department, and over 44 years with the Gibsonburg Fire Department, Jeff answered the call whenever his community needed him. Whether responding to emergencies, mentoring younger providers, or offering reassurance to patients and their families during lifeโ€™s most difficult moments, he led with compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. His influence reached far beyond the uniforms he woreโ€”it lives on in the countless lives he touched and the many first responders he inspired.

Jeffโ€™s legacy is one of selfless service, quiet strength, and genuine kindness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and the communities he faithfully served for decades.

Please keep the Herman family and all of Jeffโ€™s brothers and sisters at North Central EMS, Harris-Elmore Fire Department and the Gibsonburg Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Jeff. Thank you for a lifetime of dedication, sacrifice, and service. Your legacy will live on in every life you impacted.

โค๏ธ National CPR & AED Awareness Week (June 1โ€“7) โค๏ธ

Did you know that about 70% of cardiac arrest-related deaths occur before a person reaches the hospital?

When someone experiences cardiac arrest, every second matters. Brain damage can begin within 4โ€“6 minutes without oxygen, and brain death may occur after 10 minutes. That's why bystanders play a critical role in saving lives.

โœ… Call 911 immediately
โœ… Start CPR right away
โœ… Use an AED if one is available

Even if youโ€™ve never had formal CPR training, you can still help. Compression-only CPR is simple and effective:

๐Ÿ“ž Call 911
๐Ÿซ€ Push hard and push fast in the center of the chest until help arrives

High-quality chest compressions can double or even triple a person's chance of survival. By raising awareness and encouraging action, we can help save more lives in our communities.

A few hours of training could make a lifetime of difference for someone in need.

EMS Remembrance Day

Today, we pause to honor and remember the EMS providers who are no longer with us, but whose dedication, compassion, and service continue to inspire us every day.

We especially remember Ralph Eaton and Chris Phillips โ€” two individuals who answered the call to serve their community with courage and commitment. Their legacy lives on through the lives they touched, the patients they cared for, and the EMS family they helped strengthen.

Though they are gone, they will never be forgotten.

Please join us in taking a moment to reflect and honor all EMS professionals who made the ultimate impact through their service.
