Gerald Galant entered the U.S. Army on April 1, 1969 serving with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.

On November 16, 1969, while out on patrol, a fellow soldier stepped on a land mine and was killed instantly. Debris from the explosion struck Galant in the arm and upper thigh, severing the popliteal artery in his right leg and shattering his knee. He was airlifted to Cu Chi, hospitalized for a month in Japan, and then spent six months in a full body cast at Valley Forge General Hospital, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. His recovery required multiple surgeries.

"Stories of Valor" is an ongoing oral and biographical history program, specific to the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, that helps ensure the experiences of our combat wounded and those who gave their all in the service of America are shared with generations to come. During the 2026 Patriot Project Mission, we were proud to again capture the stories of our heroes during their trip to New York. The first three of these new profiles - U.S. Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr., U.S. Navy Petty Officer Second Class Steve Woelk, and U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Vincent Palmieri Jr. - are now available on the Honor Mission's YouTube channel, with additional videos scheduled out every week for months to come.
