Walden Fire Explorers Post 46

On Thursday March 12 Explorers participated in a difficult maze while advancing a charged hose line. Explorers also simultaneously flowed water through the line emulating fighting fires in an interior fire situation. Explorers went through the maze in groups of four to practice teamwork and communication skills. Some of our older members were even allowed to wear SCBA packs without masks on to get a feel for what it is like to have the weight on as they crawled through the maze. After Explorers finished using the hoses they drained and rolled the lines before helping to refill the squad and tanker that provided them with water.

Last Night, the Members of the Fire Explorer Post 46 visited the Orange County Fire Museum in Montgomery. Our beloved Chief Jeff Holmes did a spectacular job taking us through the evolution of the Fire Service and the neat equipment that has been used in the last 250 years. From 🪣 Buckets to Engines 🚒!

Wednesday Evening 11/26, The Explorers received plenty of ‘Hands on practice’, confidence forcing doors/overhauling with the Halligan Pry Bar and the Flathead Axe.

This past week, explorers participated in a search drill, where members were split into two teams of four. One team hid in the Walden Fire Department training building while the other team searched for them within the building. The drill is to help members understand how to conduct different types of searches during a structure fire. Is your teen interested in joining? The explorers post if for ages 13 and up! Last week the Explorer’s program practiced the proper techniques for raising and lowering ladders. Members used ladders off Walden’s Truck 240 and practiced setting up the ladders on our training building. Members were taught how to raise ladders using the flat and beam raise. At the end the members were given the opportunity to climb up the aerial on Truck 240, which was extended to the second floor window of the training building. Explorers climbed the ladder and entered the building through the second floor window then returned down the ladder back to the Truck. Is your teen interested in joining? Last week Explorers used a hose maze to practice using hoses in a fire building. Members were split into two teams, one being the engine crew and the other being the truck crew. The truck crew went into the building first and located where the “fire” was in the building by doing searches. Once the truck crew found the “fire” they radioed to the engine crew who then came in with the line. The point of the drill was to teach members how to handle the hose in the building mainly by using proper hose line stretching techniques to ensure smooth operation as they moved through the building. Once the drill was over members helped to pack the line back on to the engine. Is your teen interested in joining? The explorers post is for ages 13 and up! This past week Explorers played a game of hose ball. The object of the game is to hit a weighted exercise ball into the opposing team’s goal using water from a charged line. Teams are made up of four people which helps to teach explorers how to handle the hose and work as a unit. Even when it started raining the explorers continued playing. This past week explorers participated in a hose handling drill. Members went over how to “walk” with the hose while staying low. Each of the members got to have hose time while practicing this maneuver. The explorers leaders even got in on the fun, showing members how it was done. Is your teen interested in joining? With the new school year stating the Walden Explorer’s Post is looking forward to an exciting year. In the past our explorers have learned about firefighting with a variety of activities including forcible entry, hose stretches, and nozzle control playing “hose hockey.” Is your teen interested in joining? Thursday night 6/12 even with a ‘light crew’ we went over the Tanker Operations. We use the Tanker with any Fires outside the Village limits in our response area or at the request of our surrounding departments.
We finished the Drill doing as they did 200+ years ago here in Walden
