Today is our monthly meeting --6PM social, 6:30PM business meeting, 251 Jefferson St., Bug Tussle Annex (3rd floor). I'll bring copies of the agenda and treats.
President Obama summed up my feelings in his speech at Jesse Jackson's memorial: “Every day you wake up to things you just didn’t think were possible. ...Wherever we have a chance to make an impact, whether it’s in our school or our workplaces or our neighborhoods or our cities, [we do it] not for fame, not for glory, or because success is guaranteed, but because it gives our life purpose…because if we don’t step up, no one else will.”
And that's what we have to do. As Anne Lamott wrote, "Right foot, left foot, right foot, breathe." It's a matter of showing up, and I thank all of you who do!
Speaking of showing up -- Here's to Paula and the six other hearty souls who appeared at the Park & Ride on Saturday from noon - 1PM. She said the response from passers by was enthusiastically positive. I'm sorry I couldn't be there and so appreciate all of you who made it! Next event is Saturday March 14, noon - 1PM at the Park & Ride, Rt 1 and West Main St.
And how to keep up the pressure:
1. Call our reps! Use www.5calls.org to make it easy! Their contact info is below. Let them know we are completely opposed to the war in Iran and to Markwayne Mullin as head of DHS. As of March 6, CNN quoted a DC think tank's estimate that the war was costing $891.4 million per day. What could we do in Maine with almost $1 billion per day (or even 1/50 of that?) ? Think about it!!
2. Support our communities!
The Lions Club's Chowder & Chili Lunch on Saturday, was a great success and raised more than $4,000!!
Support threatened Mainers! Immigrants, even U.S. citizens, are wary of resuming their routines despite the supposed reduction of the ICE surge. Donate to food pantries, the ACLU of Maine, MaineNeeds (for all low-income people), or immigrant-specific groups such as Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project or Project Relief Maine to support folks who are hurting under the strategies of this cruel administration.
3. Stay connected: Welcome the Lincoln County Dems to town! You may not know that the bottom floor of 251 Jefferson St. has been rented to the LCDC. On Thursday, March 26 at 6PM - 7:30PM, they will have a meeting and potluck for any Democrats in the county to meet one another and learn about volunteer opportunities. I'd love for a bunch of Waldoboro folks to show up to welcome the team!
4. Show your pride! Buy a t-shirt!
At our meeting, we'll take orders for the Waldoboro Democrats' t-shirts (short-sleeved, printed by a Maine firm on US-made shirts.) The order will be placed tomorrow. $15 each, eco-friendly manufacture.
