On the afternoon of September 23rd, at 3:30 p.m. The Waldron City Fire Department was dispatched to multiple grass fires along city lake road, stretching from 2 miles east of Main Street, to almost City Lake. This response was to assist the Waldron rural fire department.
Due to heavy traffic and road construction, some of our personnel utilized East Highway 248 and Rebecca‘s Road to access the fire. Both Waldron Rural and Waldron City departments attacked the fire from both the east, and the west side. In total, there were six separate grass fires along the side of City Lake Road.
All fires were put out within an hour time, with moderate spread on two of the fires. No injuries were reported.
This is a good opportunity for us to speak about how dry it still is. Some of you may notice, the grass seems to be greener and taller, don’t let that fool you. The underbrush that was dead beforehand is still dead now, and even after being rained on, it is still very dry at the surface. It is vitally important to continue adhering to the burn band for Scott County.
Though it may not seem this way, conditions are still very dangerous and fires can spread rapidly, especially in windy conditions. This fire is a prime example. It’s very possible that someone hauling a trailer could have been dragging a chain which sparked these fires along the side of the highway, an exhaust backfiring could’ve also possibly have caused these fires. Although the official cause is unknown, Those are two possibilities, and probable.
Please be responsible in these dry conditions!
A huge thank you to the Waldron rural fire department, for allowing us to assist on this call. Another big thanks to the Arkansas forestry commission, Waldron, Police Department, and Scott County sheriffs department for your assistance on this call. Likewise, to the homeowners and bystanders that stepped in to help us, you are greatly appreciated!
