While we have several capable divers on the Lakes Area Dive Team, we have a very specialized piece of equipment that we use often to assist us with search and recovery. We just completed a training with it near Walker, Minnesota before the cold weather hit!
Our submersible remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is equipped with sonar, a front facing camera and a mechanical arm that is controlled by the operator. The ROV can be operated from several hundred feet away with it's tether system.
This allows our team to search large areas of water from a safe position, and we can do so without tiring out our dive team or putting them at risk. This can be very important when responding to calls that involve thin ice conditions.
The Lakes Area Dive Team is a non profit volunteer organization that assists local counties with public safety dive operations.
