Louisiana Association of Crisis Negotiators

Louisiana Association of Crisis Negotiators "Max" had assisted in training many negotiators throughout Louisiana and provided valuable insight and direction.

In 1998, a small group of Negotiators from throughout Louisiana formulated a plan which would evolve into the Louisiana Association of Crisis Negotiators (LACN). After many meetings, and with the help of Howard "Max" London (Retired / FBI Negotiations Unit), the first charter meeting was held in Baton Rouge , Louisiana in March of 1998. The LACN owes "Max" a debt of gratitude for all his advice an

d input during those early days. This first charter meeting consisted of Negotiators from the Southern and Central region of the state . Together, the LACN By Laws, Board Officers, & Charter were adopted. The first board of Directors were President - Sid Newman (Baton Rouge City Police Department) VP/Membership - Jim Craft (Lafayette Police Department) VP/Training - Ernie "Doc" Bristol (Bureau of Prisons / Oakdale) VP/CISM - Russell Trapp (U.S. Attorney's Office / Middle District) Secretary/Treasurer - Debbie Johnson (Bureau of Prisons) Director - Tanya Reeves (Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office) Director - Joe Pisano (Federal Bureau of Investigations/Lafayette) From the small concept that began within a handful of Law Enforcement, Corrections Officers, & Mental Health Professionals, LACN has grown into an Association dedicated to the ongoing training of crisis negotiators and the crisis response community in Louisiana . We, who have joined the ranks of this Association, now salute those who blaze the trail, by carrying the torch.

Negotiators Working Hard This Afternoon In Gonzales

Update: 3:08 p.m.: St. Theresa Middle School officials began dismissing students from class about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday and continued into the afternoon, city police said.

School officials had earlier removed students from a building closest to a house on East New River Street in Gonzales where a man had barricaded himself inside, police said.

The man, who was not identified, remained inside the home. The man had earlier been involved in a domestic dispute that spilled out into into East New River Street. Police Chief Sherman Jackson said the victim was able to escape and is safe.

The chief and other authorities said they planned to wait out the man.

"Hopefully, we can resolve this thing peacefully," Jackson said.

A sheriff's negotiator arrived about 3:30 p.m. at the scene but had not yet gone to the home.

A few minutes later two women came out of the house and got into two cars and left. It was unclear whether they were stopped by police.

A police vehicle blocked access to East New River Street where the home is located, but traffic was still moving on four-lane North Burnside Avenue through the center of the city. The avenue is a key commuter route in the afternoon workday.

A Gonzales Fire Department command center trailer was set up across the North Burnside from the school, where various city and parish officials and emergency responders had gathered.

The white, wood-framed house where the man is locked inside is about three homes down East New River Street from North Burnside and across the street from St. Theresa Middle School.

Jackson said the man had earlier hit the woman in the face and she ran across the street to the school office.

The man locked himself in their home, Jackson said.

Det. Sgt. Steven Nethken said police do not know if the man has a gun or other weapon.

"We have the house surrounded, and the school with security inside for the safety of the children," Police Det. Sgt. Steven Nethken said.

The house is across the street from the school on La. 44 in the heart of Gonzales.

More details to come.
