After the 9/11 attacks, over 300 search and rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero alongside human first responders. These dogs were highly trained to locate survivors in disaster zones, and many had spent years practicing scenarios where their searches ended in successful “finds.”
But at Ground Zero, the reality was devastating: day after day, the dogs found only deceased victims. Their handlers began noticing troubling changes, dogs growing visibly sad, confused, and even reluctant to continue searching.
