On behalf of the Walla Walla Fire Department, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Wildhorse Foundation for their generous donation. Your support will directly enhance our ability to provide life-saving services throughout the Walla Walla Valley.

Your contribution will be used to purchase a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV), a resource that will significantly improve our responsiveness and capability during emergency operations. This equipment will help our team reach patients more quickly and safely in challenging environments, ultimately strengthening our mission to protect the lives and well-being of our community.

Thank you for your commitment to public safety and for investing in the health and resilience of the Walla Walla Valley. We deeply appreciate your partnership.

Sincerely,

Eric Wood
Fire Chief, Walla Walla Fire Dept.

Wildhorse Foundation is pleased to announce our Q1 2026 grant awards! 🎉

This quarter, $495,628 was awarded to 35 organizations, made possible through a percentage of gaming revenues from Resort & Casino. The list includes six fire departments and districts in NE Oregon / SE Washington receiving critical equipment and safety upgrades.

We are continually inspired by the dedication of these organizations and the meaningful difference they make in our communities every day.

Today, A Shift conducted training burns in homes donated by Hayden Homes. Crews were able to train on fire attack, search and rescue, and coordinated ventilation operations. We also had the opportunity to work on officer development through size-up and tactical decision-making training. Training in acquired structures provides one of the closest experiences possible to real-life fireground conditions, and is extremely valuable to the operational readiness and preparedness of our Fire Department. We appreciate the support from Hayden Homes in making this training opportunity possible.

WWFD's CARES Team is participating in the Dog Jog 5K & Fun Run to support Blue Mountain Humane Society! Each year, BMHS does hundreds of intakes and adoptions, and performs thousands of surgeries, including low-income spay/neuter surgeries and feral cat spay/neuter surgeries, which help reduce pet overpopulation in our community.

Our team is fundraising to help BMHS continue providing medical care, safe shelter, and second chances for animals who have nowhere else to go. If you’d like to support our Dog Jog fundraiser, you can donate here: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/dogjog2026/team/1033192/

Even small donations add up quickly, and directly fund shelter care, veterinary treatment, spay and neuter surgeries, and adoption services. Thank you for supporting us and for caring about animals in our community!

Please welcome Walter, AKA “Wally,” the newest member of the Walla Walla Fire Department CARES program. Wally is a 3-month-old golden retriever who was donated to us from Bend, Oregon. He will serve as our Crisis/Community Engagement Canine, and his service will also extend throughout the City of Walla Walla in a peer support and employee wellness capacity.

Wally will soon attend training to become certified as a therapy dog. This project is funded by The University of Washington School of Social Work and their BHCORE (Behavioral Health Crisis Outreach Response and Education) Co-Response Fire Innovation Grant. WWFD CARES is one of the few fire departments in Washington state that operates a CARES program, and to our knowledge, the only one to include a canine program.

Wally is the second known canine to serve in our department. Here is a little Walla Walla Fire Department history on Sport, WWFD's first “Fire Dog”: https://wallawalladrazanphotos.blogspot.com/2018/11/sport-fire-departments-dog-statue-was.html

Today, PacifiCorp Business Manager Sheila Andreatta presented the Department a check for $5,000 on behalf of the Pacific Power Foundation, to support the purchase of an advanced aerial drone system. This will significantly enhance our ability to respond to emergencies involving critical power infrastructure.

This technology will be especially valuable during wildland fire incidents where fire risk intersects with Pacific Power’s transmission and distribution assets. Equipped with thermal imaging and live video capabilities, the drone will provide real-time aerial intelligence, allowing crews to rapidly assess fire behavior, identify threats, and determine proximity to power infrastructure. This shared situational awareness will support earlier coordination and more effective decision-making between fire response and utility emergency teams.

Beyond wildland fires, the drone will be utilized during structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, flooding, and other emergencies that pose risks to the power grid. In all scenarios, enhanced aerial intelligence will improve responder safety, operational efficiency, and protection of critical energy infrastructure.

Thank you to the Pacific Power Foundation for this generous and helpful gift!

WWFD recently partnered with the American Red Cross for a successful event, during which we installed 128 smoke detectors in homes accommodating 89 individuals.

We are also collaborating with the Red Cross to increase the number of Disaster Action Team (DAT) responders within our community. These volunteers provide critical assistance to individuals affected by disasters, including those displaced by structural fires.

Interested in helping out? Email [email protected] or check out the Disaster Action Team opportunities on the Red Cross national website: https://www.redcross.org/volunteer/disaster-action-team.html

On Wednesday, WWFD's CARES team educated staff at the Walla Walla Housing Authority on blood pressure control, mental health, AED, home safety, and Narcan use. We got many great questions and positive feedback. All of the Housing Authority's vehicles and buildings now have Narcan.
