READY, SET, GO: Understand the three evacuation levels to keep your family safe from wildfire!

In the northwest, we follow a three-level evacuation notification system. Make sure you're signed up to receive emergency alerts from your county officials and that you know what each level means:

🟢Level one: READY
Pack your go-kit, sign up for emergency alerts with your county, and plan your possible evacuation routes.

🟡Level two: SET
Grab your go-kit, check the news for updates, and leave if you feel unsafe.

đź”´Level three: GO
Leave without delay, do not stop to gather belongings or protect your home, and do not return until officials announce that the area is safe.

Current air quality in Walla Walla is categorized as VERY UNHEALTHY. This means the risk of health effects is increased for everyone.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children and teens should avoid physical activities outdoors. Everyone else should avoid strenuous outdoor activities, keep outdoor activities short, and consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Visit https://www.airnow.gov/? or download the AirNow app to view current and forecast air quality in your area and learn protective measures to take when the air is unhealthy.

For those who are beginning the recovery process after a wildfire, caring for livestock can bring another layer of worry and hard decisions.

Our Caring for Livestock After a Wildfire flyer offers guidance on what to watch for in the days and weeks after a fire, including burns, smoke exposure, changes in eating or drinking, and when to contact a veterinarian. Animals can develop complications even when injuries aren’t immediately visible, so daily checks are important.

We also have a resource on wildfire smoke and livestock. A few things to keep in mind.

Caring for animals during wildfire smoke:https://cms.agr.wa.gov/WSDAKentico/Imported/FireSmokeLivestockUCDavisPublication.pdf

• Limit strenuous activity while smoke is present.
• Provide plenty of fresh water.
• Reduce dust with low- or dust-free feed.
• Give animals time to recover — smoke-related airway damage can take several weeks.
• Contact your veterinarian if animals are coughing, having difficulty breathing, or showing other concerning symptoms.

We know farmers will do just about anything for their animals. But as you work through recovery, remember to take care of yourself, too. Your health matters, and you need to be healthy to care for your animals.
