Frenchtown Historical Foundation

Frenchtown Historical Foundation FHF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the Frenchtown Historic Site in Walla Walla, WA.

French town Historic Site interprets the history of a 19th-century mixed community of French Canadian and native American families in the Walla Walla valley. The site includes the original sites of the St. Rose of Lima Mission and the St. Rose Mission Cemetery, as well as a key location for the historic Battle of Walla Walla, also known as the Battle of Frenchtown.

The 3 June 1850, we undersigned have baptized the Adult Kayous: Tomhash, Tilaokwate, Elsayaya Uhelakeshi, Koyama Tahiamokein. Kloukemous - to the first we have given the name Pierre, to the 2nd the name Andre, to the 3rd Jean, to the 4th that of Jacques, to the 5th that of Paul. The godfather has been Mathieu Dauphin.

Today June 3rd is a solemn day of remembrance for the Cayuse Five. On this day in 1850, five young Cayouse men: Tiloukaikt, Tomahas, Kiamasumpkin, Iaiachalakis and Klokamas were hung in Oregon City after being found guilty of the Whitman Massacre.

Mathieu Dauphin, kin by marriage stood as Godfather to all five during their Baptisms by Archbishop Blanchet.

Frenchtown Historic Members, families and friends acknowledges and remembers their sacrifice.
