Good Morning Shoshone County,
Over the past six weeks, the Sheriff’s Office has been extremely busy working to restore stability, strengthen operations, and continue moving the office forward after a challenging period. I wanted to take a moment to provide the citizens of Shoshone County with an update on some of the progress that has been made and where we are headed.
From day one, one of the top priorities was ensuring a smooth transition while keeping patrol, detention, and dispatch services fully operational without interruption to the public. Despite challenges including resignations, staffing shortages, budget concerns, low morale, and operational disorganization, the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office continued showing up every day to serve our county.
We have been working hard to rebuild professionalism, teamwork, and communication both within the Sheriff’s Office and with other county entities. Just as importantly, we recognize the need to restore public confidence and trust through transparency, accountability, and consistent service to our community.
While there is still work ahead, I am proud of the progress already being made and the dedication being shown by the employees of this office.
One of the most important areas we have been focused on is staffing and retention. Building and maintaining a strong team is critical to the long-term success of the Sheriff’s Office.
We are currently processing two patrol deputy hires, with one scheduled to begin in June, along with one custody deputy hire. In addition, the positive direction of the Sheriff’s Office has already attracted interest from experienced candidates looking to join our team.
We are also currently evaluating two well-qualified applicants for our dispatcher position. Once a final selection is made, our dispatch will be fully staffed.
Based on the progress we have already made, we do not anticipate difficulty filling additional positions moving forward, including one more custody deputy position that would allow us to continue toward full jail certification.
Once we reach our minimum staffing levels within patrol, we will begin elevating the training of our deputies and working toward developing specialized task force operations focused on the most significant public safety and crime issues affecting our communities.
Perhaps most importantly, the atmosphere within the Sheriff’s Office continues to improve every day. Morale, professionalism, and teamwork are moving in the right direction, and that momentum matters. As we continue building a stable, professional, and positive organization, I believe we are heading toward a future where we will have a waiting list of qualified candidates who want to become part of this office and serve the citizens of Shoshone County.
Another major focus has been restoring organization and stability to the Sheriff’s Office budget and operations. While there were financial and operational challenges that needed to be addressed, we are now moving in a positive direction and continuing to operate within our budget.
At this time, we are not facing deficit issues, and we will continue working closely with the County Clerk and Board of County Commissioners to ensure the Sheriff’s Office remains fiscally responsible and accountable to the taxpayers of Shoshone County.
We have also developed a more transparent and accountable budget structure to improve oversight, track spending more effectively, and ensure resources are being managed responsibly.
We are carefully reviewing spending, identifying areas where we can improve efficiency, and making sure available resources are being used responsibly while still providing the level of service our citizens expect and deserve.
I also want to be very clear that I will never ask the citizens of Shoshone County for a levy to fund the Sheriff’s Office. My responsibility is to properly manage the budget we already have, improve efficiency, pursue outside funding opportunities where appropriate, and ensure taxpayer dollars are being used responsibly and effectively.
The Sheriff’s Office has also been reviewing and updating current MOUs and MOAs with surrounding areas, cities, and departments to ensure responsibilities, services, and expectations are clearly defined and operating efficiently.
Where needed, we have also worked to establish new agreements to strengthen cooperation and improve coordination between agencies and local government entities.
Part of this process has included improving oversight and accountability related to revenue associated with these agreements. We have implemented better tracking and follow-through procedures to ensure funds tied to services and agreements are being properly documented and received in a timely manner.
Another important area we have been focused on is our jail operations and continuing progress toward full jail certification.
Although the jail is not currently certified, significant progress has already been made in a relatively short period of time. We have improved cleanliness and overall day-to-day conditions within the facility, increased operational consistency and supervision, and worked to ensure inmates are receiving appropriate medical care and attention when needed.
We have also continued making progress toward meeting professional and state standards through improved procedures, accountability, and operational oversight, and our hope is to meet the state’s standards by the next certification cycle.
Community engagement and strong partnerships continue to be an important priority for the Sheriff’s Office. We remain committed to supporting our communities through local events, outreach efforts, and continued visibility throughout Shoshone County.
We have also been working to strengthen relationships and coordination with local law enforcement agencies, fire and EMS personnel, city leadership, schools, and other community partners. These working relationships are critical to providing effective service and ensuring we are all moving in the same direction when it comes to public safety.
In addition, we are transitioning Silver Valley Search & Rescue back into the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue program. We are currently in the process of reorganizing, training, and equipping the team to build a more efficient and effective resource for the citizens of this county.
We have also been working to create a Chaplain Corps program – a group of experienced peer support leaders who can provide 24/7 support services to citizens, victims, inmates, law enforcement personnel, fire and EMS responders, and others throughout the county during difficult situations. While these services have experienced delays in the past, we understand the importance of this program to our community and first responders and are committed to providing consistent support moving forward.
We are also pleased to report that DMV operations are now back to normal. The necessary repairs to the front entrance have been completed, and the lobby is once again open to the public for normal business operations.
Staff have worked hard to keep services running during the disruption, and the DMV is now operating at full capacity again. We appreciate the patience and understanding the community showed while those repairs were being completed.
While this is only a brief overview, I hope it gives the community a better understanding of some of the positive progress being made within the Sheriff’s Office.
We are moving in the right direction and remain committed to professionalism, accountability, public safety, and service to the citizens of Shoshone County.
My goal is to make the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office a premier law enforcement organization in the state – a Sheriff’s Office that other agencies strive to emulate. Based on the dedication, resilience, and positive progress our team has already demonstrated, I truly believe we can achieve that goal together.
We welcome constructive feedback and will continue striving to improve wherever needed. Thank you for your continued support, patience, and trust.
