In honor of Black History Month, we look at Dobbins Park. Located off Old Teachey Road, it was once the site of C.W. Dobbins School, the former Black high school named for its principal. The original building was demolished after a new elementary school was built farther down the road. Today, only the semicircle driveway and the former lunchroom—now a church—remain. With a little help from AI, we have colorized photos from the past.

As Town Hall makes its move this week, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the history of the building that will soon serve as Wallace’s new Town Hall.

In the mid-1980s, local residents recognized the need for expanded medical services within the community. Working together with Duplin General Hospital, community members helped make that vision a reality through local contributions and the acquisition of land. The goal was to create a “medical village,” and in January 1986, the first medical facility opened its doors.

In the years that followed, a newer facility was constructed at the front of the site, offering an urgent care and additional medical offices to better serve the community. Over time, Duplin General Hospital was sold to Vidant Health, which later became ECU Health. As ECU Health expanded, newer medical facilities were developed across from River Landing, and the original medical building was no longer needed for healthcare services.

The building was later leased to the Town of Wallace for Parks and Recreation office space, and the surrounding land was transferred to the Town to expand Clement Park. In 2024, ECU Health donated the facility to the Town of Wallace.

With growing space needs for public safety, the Town made the decision to renovate the building to serve as the new Town Hall. the move also provides the additional space for the Wallace Police Department. This transformation allows a longtime community asset to continue serving the people of Wallace in a new and meaningful way.

From Boney Street, Town Hall moved to Murray Street and has been at this location for 71 years. The original building housed administration, utility billing, police department and the town jail. Over the years it has been added on to multiple times for the fire department, additional offices and Council chamber room. In the picture below, you can see the old pump house to the right that has been used by the planning department for several years.

The facility will continue to be utilized in the future by the Town with renovations and additions for the new police department coming in the next few months.

With the moving of Town Hall this month, our first few posts look back at previous Town Halls.

From 1923 to 1954, Town Hall was located on Boney Street. Today, the building is home to the Super Mercado Latino.

The 1953 American LaFrance fire truck seen to the far left in the fire department bay is still owned by the Fire Department today.
