The Rotary High School Citizen of the Year Luncheon was held this afternoon at The Farms Country Club, and the Superintendent had the honor of attending this special event.

The Rotary Club of Wallingford enjoys a rich heritage of "Service Above Self," fostering good fellowship, community leadership, and service to others. The creation of the High School Citizen of the Year Awards is yet another example of the Rotary Club's commitment to recognizing and celebrating the outstanding youth of Wallingford.

This year's awards were presented to six exceptional high school juniors who have demonstrated a commitment to service, leadership, and citizenship. Honorees included Brody Platt and Jai Patel from Mark T. Sheehan High School; Ranya Khaile and Camila Tovar from Lyman Hall High School; and two students from Choate Rosemary Hall.

These students were selected for exemplifying Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self" through their distinguished service to their schools, communities, and humanity. While the quality of service was the primary consideration in the selection process, each recipient has also demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, and extracurricular involvement.

Congratulations to all of the recipients on this well-deserved recognition!

Administrator of the Year: Dr. Anthony Mangiafico, Director of Adult Education — Wallingford Adult Education

Since joining Wallingford Public Schools as Director of Adult Education in 2022, Dr. Anthony Mangiafico has transformed the program in remarkable ways. Under his leadership, student enrollment has grown by 79% and the program has expanded to nine sites, including the creation of the state's first workplace literacy program at a local manufacturing facility. He has secured significant increases in both federal and state grant funding, added critical support staff, introduced innovative programs and created stronger systems of support for adult learners. Dr. Mangiafico leads with clarity, compassion, and a calm presence that builds trust at every level — from the students he serves to the staff he supports and the community partners he has cultivated. His accomplishments extend well beyond Wallingford; he has served as President of the Connecticut Association for Adult and Continuing Education, presented at national conferences, and been recognized as the COABE National Outstanding Administrator in 2022. A dedicated public servant both in and out of the classroom, Dr. Mangiafico also serves as President Pro Tem of the Middletown Common Council, where he has championed equity and community improvement initiatives. His commitment to reducing barriers and expanding opportunity for adult learners is an inspiration to all of us.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mangiafico on this richly deserved recognition. We are proud to have him as part of the Wallingford Public Schools family.

Each year, we have the privilege of recognizing members of our school community whose dedication, passion, and commitment to students exemplify the very best of what Wallingford Public Schools represents. The Teacher of the Year and Paraeducator of the Year awards honor individuals who go above and beyond every single day — not for recognition, but because they genuinely believe in the potential of every child they serve. On behalf of the District AOY/TOY/POY committee, we are proud to announce and celebrate two truly deserving honorees, both from Parker Farms Elementary School.

Teacher of the Year: Alison Gibertoni, 5th Grade — Parker Farms Elementary School

With over 20 years of experience in Wallingford Public Schools, Alison Gibertoni is the kind of educator who transforms not just classrooms, but lives. Her students know they are seen, valued, and challenged — and their families consistently share that their children have never been more excited about learning. Alison designs instruction that is both rigorous and deeply responsive, blending hands-on experiences, student interests, and research-based practices to make learning meaningful and memorable. Beyond her classroom, she leads her Photography Club — which has grown from 12 to 45 students — mentors student teachers, serves as an adjunct professor, and collaborates with colleagues across the building to strengthen teaching and learning for all. Her warmth, professionalism, and unmatched energy make her classroom a place where curiosity thrives, and every student is inspired to do their best.

Paraeducator of the Year: Crystalin Czentnar, Special Education Paraeducator — Parker Farms Elementary School

Crystalin Czentnar brings extraordinary heart and professionalism to her role as a Special Education Paraeducator on the 4th-grade team at Parker Farms. She refers to her students as "her kids," and that love shows in everything she does — from patiently building confidence in students who struggle to communicate their needs, to maintaining daily behavioral data, to facilitating Book Club discussions that help students share their ideas and engage with peers. Crystalin is a vital and collaborative member of her instructional team, a Union Steward who mentors new paraeducators, and the creative force behind the school's beloved monthly birthday bulletin boards. Her dedication to putting children first, her flexibility in the face of challenges, and her genuine commitment to student growth make her a richly deserving recipient of this honor.
