September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” encourages everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones by planning ahead. One step you can take toward being more prepared is having an emergency kit ready to go with essentials like water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies, along with any specific items your family and pets may need.

As a volunteer firefighter, you’ll respond to fires, building and vehicle rescues, medical emergencies, and more throughout Nether Providence Township, Rose Valley Borough, and surrounding communities. You’ll also have the opportunity to train every Wednesday night alongside our experienced members, with all training and gear provided at no cost.

This afternoon, township companies were dispatched to the 100 block of W. Possum Hollow Road for a reported house fire.

Chief 65 arrived on scene with single story rancher style home with smoke showing from the roof. After completing a 360, it was discovered that live power lines were down on the roof, which were catching the roof on fire.

Ladder 65 arrived on scene and the crew immediately made access to the attic area to check for any extension inside of the house. Crews were able to use a dry chemical extinguisher to knock down the bulk of the fire until PECO arrived on scene to secure the power. Once the power was secured, the area was opened up to confirm all the fire was extinguished. The crew from Squad 51 arrived, established a water supply, and deployed a hand line to the interior. Units remained on scene for about an hour before returning.

This afternoon, township companies were dispatched to the intersection of Chestnut Parkway and Blakeley Road for an accident with injuries.

Squad 65 arrived on scene and reported a two vehicle accident with one occupant confined in their vehicle. The crew from the Squad stabilized the vehicle and performed a “door pop” to extricate the patient. The patient was turned over to awaiting EMS and units cleared a short time later.

Nether Providence has two fire companies that are responsible for emergency response throughout the township and Rose Valley. Based on emergency location outside of the community, either or both may respond as mutual aid to neighboring municipalities.

This partnership has been in place for over 80 years. As new members come aboard, skill and relationship building are keys to success both now and in the future.

Cooperative training nights like last night give the volunteers a chance to learn how to work together, including how to use the various apparatuses and vehicle specific equipment.

Both companies are always looking for new volunteers. Please feel free to stop in South Media Fire Company on a Monday night or Garden City Fire Company #1 on a Wednesday night to pick up an application and meet members.
