🚒💦 Drill Night at Melrose Township Fire & Rescue! 💦🚒

Yesterday’s drill gave us the opportunity to combine training, teamwork, and a little community service!

Our crew spent the evening cleaning up the park gazebo, putting our equipment to work while giving the space a good wash-down.

The drill also gave some of our medical responders the chance to get their hands on the hose and experience a little of what our firefighters do. Handling a charged hose is definitely different than it looks! It was a great opportunity to step outside of our usual roles, learn from one another, and get some hands-on experience.

Whether we’re responding to an emergency, training together, or helping take care of our community, it’s all about teamwork and being ready when we’re needed. ❤️🚒

🚑🚒 Meet Amanda Mathers! 🚒🚑

Amanda is a volunteer First Responder with Melrose Township Fire & Rescue and has proudly been part of the department for the past two years. She is also the wife of Melrose Township Fire & Rescue Chief Ben Mathers, making service to the community something that is truly a family commitment for the Mathers family. ❤️🚒

Helping others is a big part of who Amanda is, both inside and outside the department. Amanda has been an EMT for 9 years, dedicating nearly a decade to caring for people during emergencies and some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

In addition to her work in EMS, Amanda is a certified Life Coach, Grief Coach, and Victim Advocate. These roles complement her career in emergency services, giving her additional experience in supporting people through grief, trauma, major life changes, and challenging situations. Sometimes helping someone means providing medical care, and other times it simply means being present, listening, and offering compassion.

Amanda isn't finished learning, either! She is currently working toward obtaining her Paramedic license and hopes to attend Fire School in the future so she can expand her role within Melrose Township Fire & Rescue and help on the fire side of things as well. 🚑🔥🚒

When she's not working, volunteering, or studying, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family and collecting rocks and crystals—a hobby that has grown into quite the collection! 💜🪨✨

For Amanda, being part of Melrose Township Fire & Rescue is about more than responding to calls. It's about serving her community, continuing to learn, helping people on some of their hardest days, and being part of a department that feels like family.

Amanda is proud to serve alongside the members of Melrose Township Fire & Rescue and alongside her husband, Chief Ben Mathers. She looks forward to continuing her journey in EMS, earning her Paramedic license, and hopefully adding firefighter to that journey in the future.

Community Connections Matter 🚒

One of the best parts of serving our community is creating moments that children will remember for years to come.

Today, Firefighter and Medical Officer Tim LaGasse took time to let these future firefighters get a hands-on experience with the Melrose Township Fire Department. From trying on junior firefighter helmets and exploring the fire engine to getting the opportunity to hold and spray a real fire hose, there were smiles, laughter, and memories made all around.

At Melrose Township Fire Department, we believe community education starts at a young age. Giving children the opportunity to meet firefighters, learn about fire safety, and experience our equipment up close helps build trust, confidence, and maybe even inspires the next generation of firefighters and EMS providers.

A special thank you to Tim LaGasse for taking the time to make today so special. Your dedication to both serving our community and mentoring its youngest members truly reflects the heart of our department.

You never know when a simple experience with a fire truck and a fire hose might spark a lifelong dream.

🚒 Please join us in welcoming our new Fire Chief interim, Benjamin Mathers! 🚒

The Melrose Township Fire Department is proud to introduce Chief Benjamin (Ben) Mathers as he steps into this leadership role during an exciting time of growth and transition for our department.

Chief Mathers brings nearly two decades of experience in the fire service, having served 19 years with the Boyne City Fire Department and 17 years with Boyne City EMS. He also joined the Melrose Township Fire Department several years ago, where he has already become a valued member of our team.

His dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving others make him an excellent choice to lead our department into the future. As we continue to strengthen our organization, recruit new members, and provide the highest level of service to our community, we are confident Chief Mathers will help guide us forward.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Ben Mathers on his appointment and wishing him success in his new role. We look forward to the future under his leadership and thank our community for its continued support of the Melrose Township Fire Department.

Our department is still actively seeking new members!
We are looking for individuals in our area that are interested in becoming trained as medical first responders and/or firefighters.
🔥The department pays for all necessary training and equipment
🔥This is a paid volunteer position, members are paid for the emergencies they respond to
🔥Flexible with no set hours
🔥Must be 18 years or older with a valid driver's license

We understand that volunteerism is hard these days and there are many barriers that prevent those interested from getting involved.
Many people work multiple jobs just to make ends meet, people struggle to find affordable housing in our area, child care is tough to come by under normal circumstances let alone for emergency response, etc.
We understand that life makes community service feel impossible sometimes but if you do have the ability to attend a couple times a month it could make a major impact on our community.
