Shhh!!!...a Portrait in 12 Volumes of Gray 🤫
The library’s eye-catching art piece, “Shhh…a portrait in 12 volumes of gray,” turns thousands of sketchbooks into one giant optical illusion. Built from 3,960 sketchbooks stacked on a massive bookshelf in the lobby, the colorful spines act like tiny pixels that create the image of a woman making the classic “shhh” gesture. From across the room, the picture looks smooth and almost photographic, but as you get closer, it breaks apart into abstract blocks of color and texture. 🖼️
What makes the installation so fun is the way it plays with perspective and surprises visitors depending on where they stand. The familiar “shhh” gesture gives a humorous nod to the traditional quiet library, while also reminding people that libraries today are lively community spaces filled with conversation, technology, events, and creativity (all for FREE, I might add). The artwork is both playful and interactive, inviting people to stop, look twice, and experience the space in a new way.
