Last month, we asked which of these five countries you'd most like to visit. Thirty-four of you voted on our Community Tree, and Thailand narrowly claimed the top spot—winning by just one vote!

We love learning more about our community at Walnut Creek. Stay tuned for our next question!

Shhh!!!...a Portrait in 12 Volumes of Gray 🤫

The library’s eye-catching art piece, “Shhh…a portrait in 12 volumes of gray,” turns thousands of sketchbooks into one giant optical illusion. Built from 3,960 sketchbooks stacked on a massive bookshelf in the lobby, the colorful spines act like tiny pixels that create the image of a woman making the classic “shhh” gesture. From across the room, the picture looks smooth and almost photographic, but as you get closer, it breaks apart into abstract blocks of color and texture. 🖼️

What makes the installation so fun is the way it plays with perspective and surprises visitors depending on where they stand. The familiar “shhh” gesture gives a humorous nod to the traditional quiet library, while also reminding people that libraries today are lively community spaces filled with conversation, technology, events, and creativity (all for FREE, I might add). The artwork is both playful and interactive, inviting people to stop, look twice, and experience the space in a new way.

A HUGE thank you to Zoya and Serena, our two wonderful Teen Advisory Board members, for putting this program together! 🌟

Middle and high school students had the opportunity to hear from incredible local leaders who shared their journeys, challenges, and advice on leadership, service, advocacy, and career growth.

A special thank you to our amazing presenters:
✨ Cherise Khaund – Walnut Creek City Planning Commissioner
✨ Rashid Yahya – Owner/President of Pacific States Aviation, Inc.
✨ Jodi Loyles – Executive Director, Pharmacy, Kaiser Permanente
✨ Alana O. – Youth Leader and CEO of Jewelry with a Message

Thank you for inspiring our youth to lead with confidence, purpose, and passion. We are so grateful to everyone who attended and helped make this summit such a success!
