On June 16th, Council presented a proclamation in celebration of Juneteenth to Nicole Hankton, the Interim President & CEO of the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau.

This holiday marks the oldest national commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth represents freedom, as well as how the emancipation was tragically delayed for enslaved people in the deepest reaches of the Confederacy.

This proclamation also highlights Walnut Creek’s commitment to combatting racial injustice and recognizing the significant role that African Americans have played in the history of the United States.

In addition, Mayor Wilk approved a proclamation to be delivered to Superintendent Marie Morgan, honoring her for an extraordinary career in public education and dedicated service to the Walnut Creek community. 🌳
