📣 Please Be Advised

March 31, 2026| Emergency Services| Carl Young

By order of the Huerfano County Board of Commissioners, Huerfano County has been placed under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective March 31, 2026.

The following activities are prohibited during Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:

1 Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire or campfire except within fire grates in developed/improved campgrounds and picnic grounds or private residences in areas cleared at least six feet of all flammable materials. Rock campfire rings and fire pans are considered temporary and are not acceptable. Devices using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel are permitted.

2 Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

3 Possessing, discharging or using any type of fireworks or other pyrotechnic device to include sparklers. This does not differentiate between lawful use and careless/negligent use of fireworks, but prohibits all fireworks activity and use on public and private lands.

4 Operating a chainsaw without a USDA or SAE approved spark arrester properly installed and working, a chemical fire extinguisher of not less than eight ounces capacity by weight, and one round point shovel with an overall length of at least 36 inches.

5 Using an explosive or exploding targets.

6 Using a welder, either arc or gas, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame, except in cleared areas of at least ten feet in diameter with a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher of not less than eight ounces capacity.

The following exceptions are permitted during Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:
1 Open burning conducted with an approved open burning permit.
2 Smokeless flares or safety flares for the combustion of waste gasses.
3 Flares used to indicate danger.
4 All prescribed burns will be reviewed and approved by a qualified representative from the respective fire district.

These restrictions are in place until rescinded by the Board of County Commissioners. Violations are punishable by a fine of up to $1000. Anyone negligently or willfully starting a wildland fire could also be held responsible for the costs of that fire.

If you’ve ever wondered what firefighters do when we’re not on calls…

✅ We’re out here practicing how to turn “bad day on the highway” into “everyone gets home.”

Vehicle extrication training last weekend was a success — proud of this crew. 🚒💪

Thanks Paul Montoya for donating the vehicles for our department to train with!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

 🔥 CTFB Reminder 🔥

Before you strike that spark, make sure there are no fire restrictions in your county.

Planning to cook over a campfire?
👉 Make sure it is completely dead out before leaving the area. Drown it, stir it, and feel for heat.

Using a smoker, gas grill, or charcoal barbecue?
👉 Keep it at least 10 feet away from any structure.
👉 Make sure it is fully contained and extinguished before walking away.

It only takes one ember to start a wildfire.

Let’s all do our part to keep our communities safe.

⚠️ It’s February... but the ground is telling a different story.

We might be in the middle of winter, but with the lack of snow and warmer temps across much of the state, our fire risk is higher than usual for this time of year. 🍂🌬️
Dry grass and high winds don’t care what month is on the calendar. Please keep these "Dry Winter" safety tips in mind:

🚫🔥 Watch Your Ash: If you use a wood stove or fireplace, never dump ashes outdoors or in a plastic bin. Place them in a metal container with a tight lid and soak them with water. Wind can easily carry a "dead" ember into dry grass.

🚫🔥 Drag Chains Cause Sparks: If you are hauling trailers or equipment, double-check your chains. One spark on the highway is all it takes.

🚫🔥 Check the Forecast: Avoid any outdoor burning on windy days, even if it feels cold outside.

Let’s be careful out there, Colorado. We need moisture, but until we get it, we need vigilance. 🏔️

🚗💨 Today’s Weather Forecast:
30 MPH winds with a strong chance of “Why is my truck drifting like it’s possessed?”

If you’re out and about today, remember:
❄️ Blowing snow can turn into sneaky ice faster than you can say “I was going slow, I swear.”
💨 Gusty winds can push high-profile vehicles like they owe it money.
🚙 Just because your vehicle can handle it… doesn’t mean the road agrees.

Slow it down.
Increase your following distance.
And if conditions get sketchy—there’s no shame in turning around.

We’d much rather wave at you from the station than meet you in the ditch. 😉

Stay safe out there, Huerfano County Fire Protection District has your back. ❤️‍🔥
