The Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office does not support or endorse the new gun control bill going into effect, known as SB25-003. Unfortunately it is a state law, for now, and we can't legally go around it.

With that out of the way, for those wishing to participate in the new system to obtain restricted fi****ms in the future, here are some simple resources, and steps, to help.
Per CRS 18-12-116

You must first create an account, then complete and submit an application with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife:

You must then complete a name based background check, per CRS 18-12-116(5)(b)(III)(b). The following link is to one of the many available, the Sheriff’s Office does not endorse or require this specific one:

You must then bring your government issued photographic identification and the results of the background check to the Sheriff’s Office. You will need to request to speak with the secretary who processes the conceal handgun permits. We will assess the following fees at this point. Free for those who live in Huerfano County. $50.00 for those who live in another county, which county is not participating in the new law. $100.00 for those who live in another county, which county is participating in the new law. We will then process your application and if approved, issue the eligibility card. The timeline for issuance of the card is currently unknown.

Once you have the eligibility card you will then need to complete a course and exam with an approved instructor. If you hold a valid CPW hunter education card this course is 4 hours. If you do not then the course is 12 hours over 2 different days. Please keep in mind during this step an exam and hands on practical must be completed with a 90% or better. Huerfano County does have two concealed handgun class instructors:

Once you have successfully passed all these steps you may then go and purchase a fi***rm that is restricted with this law. This eligibility card does not exempt you from completing the background check or the 3 day waiting period also required when purchasing a fi***rm.

Evacuation Update – Libre Area

Due to the challenging terrain and limited accessibility to residents, an evacuation order was previously issued for the Libre area during the H16/H17 evacuation.

The evacuation status for the Libre area has been reduced to **Pre-Evacuation**. Residents may return but are encouraged to remain prepared should conditions change.

Please continue to monitor official channels for the latest updates and follow all guidance from emergency management officials and Huerfano County Sheriff's Office.

Today an anonymous donor donated $20 to the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office for the Code 4: Cops and Kids Community Program ran by Deputy Beckwith. We would like to thank this anonymous donor for their generosity. This will allow the program to purchase items for the kids to use.

On July 1st several deputies with the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office went to the San Luis area and executed a search warrant with the cooperation and assistance of the Costilla County Sheriffs Office.
This search warrant was obtained through an investigation stemming from a burglary in the Silver Spurs area earlier this year. Items were located that are believed to be from criminal activity.
This is an ongoing investigation. We would like to thank the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office for their help. Criminal activity does not stop at the county line, neither does the law enforcement work to stop and bring the individuals involved to justice.

The Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be wildfire aware as we approach and celebrate the 4th of July. We have had several wildfires this year. With the very dry conditions we are experiencing this year, it won't take much to ignite a wildfire that could devastate the county. As you celebrate, keep in mind a few small rules that can make a big difference.

For outside fires, including campfires:
Prohibited on public and private lands, roads, and trails under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions: Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire.
◦ Exception: Propane grills are allowed if the grill can be turned off with a k**b or the flip of a switch.
◦ Exception: If fire is a requirement to do business (for example, a barbecue restaurant), the business shall be requested to meet mitigation guidelines commensurate with the size and location of the fire and the level of fire restriction enacted.

For fireworks:
Possessing, discharging or using any type of fireworks or other pyrotechnic device to include sparklers. This does not differentiate between lawful use and careless/negligent use of fireworks, but prohibits all fireworks activity and use on public and private lands.
