It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired firefighter Kevin Jacovetta on Friday, Sept. 19, following a courageous battle with cancer. His death has been designated a Line of Duty Death - Illness (LODD-I), tied to injuries sustained while heroically serving our community.
Kevin, or “KJ”, served Arvada Fire for over 33 years with unwavering dedication. He joined as a volunteer in 1988, was hired as a full-time, career firefighter in 1999, and held the roles of firefighter/EMT, engineer, and acting officer throughout his career. KJ was a well-respected member of our department and a true example of professionalism, dedication, and bravery.
In 2011, he was severely burned while rescuing a fellow firefighter during a devastating house fire—an act of bravery that earned him our Medal of Valor. Although he courageously recovered and returned to duty, complications from his injuries eventually led to his retirement in 2021. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2023.
“To many, many people in our department, Kevin was a mentor, friend, and true hero,” said Arvada Fire Chief Kirk Lock. “He was not only a skilled and selfless firefighter, but also a devoted husband, father, and friend. Sadly, his passing serves as a tragic reminder of the link between firefighting and cancer, and the dangerous working conditions firefighters selflessly enter to help others.”
Details about services will be announced soon.
Arvada Fire stands with Kevin’s family and loved ones during this time of mourning and remembrance. Flags at our stations will be flown at half-staff and Arvada Fire personnel will shroud their badges for 30 days. Rest in peace, Kevin… We will carry your memory forward.
