Our community has lost one of its strongest pillars. Travis Billings, Assistant Fire Chief of the Campo Fire Department, was a man everyone knew and respected. He was always the first to lend a hand, the kind of person you could count on no matter the need.

A hard worker, a devoted husband, father, and son — Travis poured his heart into his family, his work, and the Campo and Baca County communities he loved so deeply. His dedication, leadership, and kindness touched countless lives, and his absence will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Chief. Your service, friendship, and example will never be forgotten. 🚒❤️

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired firefighter Kevin Jacovetta on Friday, Sept. 19, following a courageous battle with cancer. His death has been designated a Line of Duty Death - Illness (LODD-I), tied to injuries sustained while heroically serving our community.

Kevin, or “KJ”, served Arvada Fire for over 33 years with unwavering dedication. He joined as a volunteer in 1988, was hired as a full-time, career firefighter in 1999, and held the roles of firefighter/EMT, engineer, and acting officer throughout his career. KJ was a well-respected member of our department and a true example of professionalism, dedication, and bravery.

In 2011, he was severely burned while rescuing a fellow firefighter during a devastating house fire—an act of bravery that earned him our Medal of Valor. Although he courageously recovered and returned to duty, complications from his injuries eventually led to his retirement in 2021. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2023.

“To many, many people in our department, Kevin was a mentor, friend, and true hero,” said Arvada Fire Chief Kirk Lock. “He was not only a skilled and selfless firefighter, but also a devoted husband, father, and friend. Sadly, his passing serves as a tragic reminder of the link between firefighting and cancer, and the dangerous working conditions firefighters selflessly enter to help others.”

Details about services will be announced soon.

Arvada Fire stands with Kevin’s family and loved ones during this time of mourning and remembrance. Flags at our stations will be flown at half-staff and Arvada Fire personnel will shroud their badges for 30 days. Rest in peace, Kevin… We will carry your memory forward.

The Springfield Police Department would like to recognize and thank Jamie Smith, Court Liaison for the 15th Judicial District, for her dedicated efforts in helping bring the powerful documentary Devastated to our community.

This emotional and eye-opening film shines a light on the fentanyl epidemic and its devastating impact on individuals, families, and entire communities. The documentary features the personal stories of parents who have lost children to fentanyl poisoning, along with powerful insights from law enforcement, recovering addicts, the medical community, politicians, and even a former drug dealer who discusses his involvement in fentanyl operations.

Jamie Smith shared, “Fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for Americans 18 to 45 years of age. The Drug Enforcement Administration calls the fentanyl epidemic ‘the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced.’”

She went on to say, “Tragic in every way, fentanyl’s impact has touched every corner of this once proud state. Though the film focuses on Colorado, it is emblematic of what every state in the country is experiencing today.”

Here in Springfield, we are seeing this reality firsthand. Officers have located fentanyl in the field, made arrests for its possession, and continue to witness its growing presence in our community.

This screening is a valuable opportunity for residents to better understand the fentanyl crisis and its far-reaching effects. We are incredibly thankful to Jamie Smith for making this important event possible and helping foster awareness and dialogue around this critical issue.
