To go from this to that … in under 12 hours

It’s amazing this Good Samaritan saw this little opossum trembling in the road

We immediately treated for fleas and placed in an incubator
Once warm we were able to give hydration therapy

Let talk about the reality with rehabbing raccoons 🦝

We adore our little mischievous woodland creatures but these guys are little incubators for most viruses

The virus hitting us hard this year is Parvo
Canine parvovirus (CPV) and Feline panleukopenia (FPV) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal viral disease that attacks rapidly dividing cells, primarily in the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow, causing severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, and fever

Raccoons can get BOTH 😔

Each raccoon goes through a 25 day quarantine where we vaccinate with both canine and feline vaccines.
We try and give these babies the best chance possible but during that quarantine we basically hold our breath

Once a baby stops eating or we have diarrhea- we test 🧪
We hold our breath and then we see 2 lines 😔
The treatment is supportive care but also you have to outweigh the risk

Parvo is like glitter

We have lost many babies to parvo but we do have some still fighting 🥺

We received this handsome BIG boy after animal control pull him from a dumpster

Typically this is just a catch and release but our animal control hero’s noticed this boy has a massive wound on his back

We imagine he might need vet care to remove the dead tissue
We started antibiotics and pain meds and he has a safe place to rest

We are unsure sure what happened to him but we have seen this injury before and it was most likely the result of a burn 🥺

Wound care is a long and tedious process

😞 our momma opossum didn’t survive her injuries
Her babies were still clinging to her body when we checked on early Monday morning

They are still calling for their mom were are hoping to place them with one of our surrogate momma opossums for comfort

We understand accidents happen with wildlife crossing the road but please be mindful and keep these little families in mind

🎇4th of July isn’t so fun for our wildlife 🎆
This poor momma ran in fear with her babies.
She was hit by a car and left for dead
Unfortunately one of her babies didn’t make it.
X-rays will need to be done but her jaw is badly damaged 😞
She is started on pain medication (safe for the babies) and antibiotics

Sometimes all we can do is try 😞

This little girl came in barely breathing.
We immediately started fluids with b12 and removing the fly eggs and biting ants.

Her gums didn’t have a good color and she was skin and bones.

After we removed the fly eggs we placed her in the incubator to rest.
Moments later our rehabber noticed she was agonal breathing 😞

Agonal breathing (or agonal respiration) is an abnormal, involuntary brainstem reflex characterized by gasping, labored or irregular breaths that occur when the brain is severely deprived of oxygen. It is not true breathing, it does not deliver adequate oxygen to the body, and it is a critical sign of impending death.

There was nothing to be done..
We picked her up and held her as she took her last breaths.

Sometimes all we can be is a safe place to pass.
We tried sweet girl.. we tried 😞

🩵We are excited that most of our baby raccoons are out of quarantine and can now be fed together!! 🤩

Each raccoon intake , whether single or coming in together MUST be in quarantine for minimum of 25 days 🫨

That’s a lot of changing gloves, baby bottles and keeping everyone separate

Why do we do this?

Raccoons can carry parasites and viruses like parvo or distemper
All the things you deworm and vaccinate your dogs and cats for.
Keeping them separate limits the spread of any virus 🦠

We celebrate these small little moments 😊
