🔥 COTTON COUNTY BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥

The Cotton County Board of County Commissioners has issued a county-wide burn ban effective August 10, 2026, due to dry and hazardous fire conditions.

🚫 Outdoor burning, campfires, bonfires, and fireworks are prohibited. Certain cooking, welding, road construction, agricultural, and prescribed-burning activities are allowed only under the conditions outlined in the resolution.

The burn ban may remain in effect for up to 14 days and will be reviewed based on fire conditions.

Please take this seriously. Our fire departments have already responded to numerous fires under extreme heat and dry conditions. Help us prevent the next one. 🔥🚒

🚔 Stolen Vehicle Investigation Update

The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office has made the first arrest in its ongoing stolen vehicle investigation.

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Dakota Braswell was located on a county road north of Temple. After a short foot pursuit, deputies deployed a TASER, and Braswell was taken into custody without further incident.

In addition to the original warrant, Braswell faces additional charges, including False Personation, Assault and Battery Upon a Police Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

This is the first arrest in the investigation, which remains active. Additional arrests and charges are possible as investigators continue to follow leads.

We appreciate the dedication of our deputies and the continued support of our community throughout this investigation.

As always, all persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

🚨 Busy 48 Hours for Cotton County First Responders 🚨

Over the past 48 hours, Cotton County firefighters and first responders have responded to 6 wildfires and 1 house fire.

With hot temperatures, dry vegetation, and elevated fire danger, conditions remain favorable for fires to spread quickly.

Please do your part:
🔥 Avoid burning unless absolutely necessary.
🚬 Never toss cigarette butts from a vehicle.
🚜 Be cautious with equipment that can create sparks.
🚗 Don’t park vehicles in tall, dry grass.
📞 Report smoke or fire immediately.

A huge thank you to all of the volunteer firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, emergency management, dispatchers, and neighboring agencies who have worked tirelessly to protect our communities.

Cotton County Sheriff’s Office Recovers All Seven Vehicles and Trailers Stolen from Love’s Travel Stop; Separate Stolen Ford Expedition Also Recovered

Walters, Oklahoma – July 30, 2026

The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office has recovered all seven vehicles and trailers stolen during a vehicle theft that occurred at the Love’s Travel Stop near Interstate 44 and State Highway 5 on July 23, 2026.

On Tuesday, July 28, deputies recovered six of the seven stolen vehicles and trailers:

2019 Nissan Versa
2015 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup
2012 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup
2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle
Car hauler trailer
Car dolly

On Thursday, July 30, deputies recovered the seventh and final outstanding vehicle—a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle—during the course of the ongoing investigation.

The motorcycle was located at a residence in Temple after deputies developed information during the investigation. Deputies confirmed the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), identifying it as the motorcycle stolen from the Love’s Travel Stop on July 23.

In a separate investigation, on Wednesday, July 29, deputies responded to a burned vehicle on County Road 2700, north of County Road 1810. Through investigative efforts, the vehicle was identified as a 2013 Ford Expedition that had been reported stolen from Stephens County. Although the vehicle had been destroyed by fire, deputies were able to confirm its identity through the remaining Vehicle Identification Number. At this time, deputies have not established a connection between the Ford Expedition theft and the Love’s Travel Stop investigation.

Sheriff Tim King commended the work of the deputies and the cooperation between partnering agencies.

“Recovering every vehicle and trailer stolen from the Love’s incident in just one week is a significant accomplishment. Our deputies have worked tirelessly, following every lead and coordinating with our law enforcement partners to return stolen property to its rightful owners. While we’re pleased to have recovered all of the stolen property from the Love’s theft, both investigations remain active, and we will continue pursuing every lead to hold those responsible accountable.”

The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere appreciation to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office for their professionalism, cooperation, and assistance throughout these investigations.

🚨 Illegal Dumping Will Not Be Tolerated in Cotton County 🚨

The Cotton County Sheriff's Office has recently investigated multiple illegal dumping complaints throughout the county. As a result of these investigations, criminal charges are being filed against several individuals responsible for unlawfully disposing of trash and other debris.

Over the past seven years, the Cotton County Sheriff's Office has successfully investigated and prosecuted numerous illegal dumping cases. We remain committed to protecting our roadsides, waterways, and private property from those who choose to unlawfully discard their waste.

Illegal dumping is more than an eyesore—it creates health hazards, damages private property, contaminates our environment, and places an unnecessary burden on our landowners and taxpayers. It is a crime, and those responsible will be held accountable.

If you choose to dump trash along county roads, on private property, or in other unauthorized locations, understand that you may be identified through evidence left behind, witness statements, surveillance cameras, or other investigative methods.

We encourage everyone to dispose of waste properly and to report anyone observed illegally dumping in Cotton County.

The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Jailer (Detention Officer).

Position: Full-Time
Location: Cotton County Detention Center – Walters, Oklahoma
Schedule: Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Responsibilities Include:
• Supervising inmates and maintaining facility security
• Conducting headcounts, cell checks, and perimeter checks
• Processing inmate intake, booking, and release
• Monitoring cameras, radio traffic, and jail operations
• Completing reports and maintaining accurate logs
• Ensuring safety procedures and CCSO policies are followed

Minimum Requirements:
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must pass a background check and drug screening
• Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• No felony convictions

Deputy Brown and Deputy Trent Thompson are attending the Oklahoma D.A.R.E. Conference at Choctaw Casino Resort, joining fellow educators and law enforcement professionals from across the state.
