It's crucial to follow proper procedures and document the damage thoroughly when dealing with the aftermath of a severe wind and rain storm. Here's a checklist to help you in the process:

1. **Safety First:**
- Before documenting damage, ensure that the area is safe to enter.
- Take necessary precautions to avoid injury or further damage.

2. **Photographs:**
- Take clear and detailed photos of all the damage, both inside and outside your property.
- Include wide-angle shots and close-ups to provide a comprehensive view.

3. **Written Documentation:**
- Prepare a written description of the damage. Note the date and time of the incident.
- Include details on the affected areas and the extent of the damage.

4. **Save Receipts:**
- Keep all receipts related to temporary repairs, emergency services, or any expenses incurred due to the damage.
- This includes receipts for materials, labor, and any other relevant costs.

5. **Quotes for Repairs:**
- Obtain quotes from contractors or repair professionals for the cost of fixing the damage.
- Document the estimates in writing, including a breakdown of the costs.

6. **Insurance Contact:**
- Notify your insurance company as soon as possible about the damage.
- Provide them with a detailed account of the incident and the documentation you've gathered.

7. **Claim Forms:**
- Obtain and complete any necessary claim forms from your insurance company.
- Keep a copy of all forms for your records.

8. **Communication Records:**
- Document all communication with your insurance company, including dates, times, and the names of representatives you spoke to.

9. **Federal Disaster Assistance:**
- If (and when) applicable, follow guidelines and procedures for applying for federal disaster assistance.
- Keep in mind that approval is not guaranteed, but proper documentation strengthens your case. For example, photograph debris before removing it.

10. **Emergency Assistance:**
- If you need immediate assistance, inquire about emergency relief programs or services available in your area. For urgent needs, call 9-1-1 and for non-urgent needs, call 2-1-1.

11. **Keep Records Organized:**
- Create a dedicated folder or digital file to keep all documentation organized.
- This will make it easier to provide information to insurance companies or authorities.

Remember that the sooner you document and report the damage, the faster you can initiate the recovery process. It's always wise to consult with your insurance company for specific guidelines and requirements in your situation.

According to the US Coast Guard, 70% of boat operators who died in 2019 had no formal boating education and were unprepared in case of an emergency. Now is the time to learn boating safety skills, including cold water safety! Some great resources can be found at the following links:
