Ogden, a former Postmaster of Walton. Ogden Was elected to represent Delaware County in the state legislature in 1834. Later, he traveled west and helped establish the city of Chicago, subsequently serving as its first mayor. When he died in 1877, Ogden left funds for public purposes. Residents of the Walton community suggested an endowment for a library. Construction of the library began in 1896

and was completed in 1897. It was designed by the firm Morris and Walker of New York City, and was built by Alexander Carman of Binghamton. It was constructed from native blue stone taken partly from the quarries in Marvin Hollow and Shepard Hill. The library was opened to the public on January 29, 1899, and in 1984 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, several renovations and flood reparations have been made to increase the interior space and services without altering the historic structure.

All May long, we’re celebrated the moms who shaped our favorite stories.

Mrs. Little from Stuart Little shows us that motherhood is rooted in love and acceptance. Though her family may look a little different, she embraces Stuart completely—caring for him with tenderness, patience, and pride.

Motherhood in literature isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s as complex as the stories themselves.

Some were nurturing and gentle. Some were practical, protective, devoted, or fiercely determined. Some made mistakes. Some weren’t mothers in the traditional sense at all—but still offered the love, guidance, and care that helped shape the stories we remember most.

Thank you for joining us throughout May as we explored the many faces of motherhood in literature. We loved revisiting these unforgettable characters with you.

For the month of May we're celebrating the moms who raised us, both on and off the page.

Nana reminds us that mothering can come from many places, including grandparents whose wisdom, kindness, and steady presence help shape how children see the world.

Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easygoing even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe. Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.

As the school year comes to a close, the William B. Ogden Free Library invites families to kick off a summer full of reading and discovery with our 2026 Summer Reading Program, “Unearth a Story,” on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM. Join us for this special sign-up event and get registered for a season filled with books, prizes, and engaging activities for all ages.

Children can celebrate by adopting their very own stuffed animal reading buddy to take home and read to each day, complete with an adoption certificate, materials to create a custom collar, and a carrier to decorate. Most importantly, signing up opens the door to earning prizes just for reading and participating in the many fun programs we have planned throughout the summer.

If you’re unable to attend the kick-off event, be sure to stop by the library anytime during the following week to sign up and join in the excitement. (June 29 - July 3).

Join us each day in May as we celebrate iconic moms from the pages of literature.

In this book David’s mother spends much of the story correcting, redirecting, and cleaning up after her energetic son.

Like many parents, she balances frustration with love, setting boundaries while still making sure her child knows he is loved at the end of the day.
