🌡️ Extreme Heat Expected This Weekend 🌡️

As we head into the weekend, we want to remind everyone to prepare for dangerously hot conditions.

A prolonged period of hazardous heat is expected to begin Saturday and continue through Monday. Current forecasts indicate that Sunday and Monday will have a Major Heat Risk (Level 3 of 4), meaning heat-related illnesses are likely for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration, especially those spending extended periods outdoors.

Protect yourself and your loved ones by taking these precautions:
☀️ Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
🧢 Limit strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.
🚗 Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a short time.
👵 Check on older adults, neighbors, and those with chronic medical conditions to ensure they have access to a cool environment.
🐾 Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and shade and avoid walking them on hot pavement.

Know the warning signs of heat-related illness:

Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, nausea, headache, or cool, clammy skin. Move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
Heat stroke: High body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, hot/red skin, or seizures. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately.

Whether you're attending fairs, working outdoors, enjoying the lake, or spending time with family, please take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and following guidance from the National Weather Service.

Have a safe and healthy weekend, Leavenworth County!
