The Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Madison County Office of Emergency Management proudly operate a joint Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program serving Madison County.

The ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐˜† ๐—จ๐—”๐—ฆ ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ consists of eight FAA Part 107-licensed pilots who use drones as an important public safety tool. Drones can provide critical support during:
โ€ข Lost or missing person searches
โ€ข Fleeing suspect incidents
โ€ข Overwatch during critical incidents
โ€ข Water rescues
โ€ข Building searches and clearing operations
โ€ข Fire and accident investigations
โ€ข And many other emergency and public safety operations

The Madison County UAS program ๐’…๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’๐’๐’• conduct proactive, general surveillance of private property. We take privacy seriously and use DroneSense and AirData software to track UAS operations, monitor where flights are being conducted, and help ensure compliance with department policy and applicable laws.

The FAA regulates drones and the nationโ€™s airspace. Local law enforcement has very limited authority to enforce regulations involving drone operations.
๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ Drone operation is legal in most areas of Madison County unless the FAA has established an applicable airspace restriction.
๐Ÿšจ Please do not operate a drone over an emergency scene. While the Sheriffโ€™s Office cannot generally restrict lawful drone activity, an unauthorized drone can interfere with public safety UAS operations and, more importantly, helicopter operations.
๐Ÿš A critical safety issue: A medical helicopter will not approach or attempt to land at an emergency scene while a drone is operating in the area. A drone that may seem harmless can create a serious safety risk for an aircraft and potentially delay lifesaving medical care.

Our goal is to use this technology responsiblyโ€”to improve the safety of our residents, visitors, and first responders while respecting the privacy of our community.
