Our thoughts are with our neighbors in Verona as they navigate their unfathomable loss. When one of us falls, we all feel it. Although he is gone, his legacy and presence will remain with all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the members of the Verona Fire Department announce the passing of Assistant Fire Chief Michael Robert Hawthorne.
Chief Hawthorne faithfully served the Verona Fire Department for many years, most recently as Assistant Fire Chief for the past three years. Throughout his time in the Verona Fire Department, he also served as Captain and Lieutenant, ultimately becoming a Life Member of the department, allowing him to earn the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters through his unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the residents of Verona.
Mike Hawthorne was far more than a title or rank. Joining the department at a young age, he was a trusted friend, mentor, and dependable presence within our department. No matter the situation, he was someone that anyone could rely on. Whether responding to emergencies, helping a fellow member, or lending a hand wherever it was needed, he was always there.
Beyond his leadership roles, Mike played an instrumental part in one of our department's most cherished traditions, the annual Verona Fireman's Field Days. He devoted countless hours to helping organize and operate the popular pizza booth. Hard work and dedication helped make the event a success year after year and created lasting memories for both department members and the community.
Chief Hawthorne’s love for the Verona Fire Department was evident in everything he did. He gave selflessly of his time, energy, and heart to this organization. In return, the department loved him just as deeply. His presence, leadership, friendship, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service, brotherhood, and community. Mike’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched, the firefighters he mentored, and the traditions he helped uphold.
On behalf of the officers and members of the Verona Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to Michael's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We ask the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as we honor the life and service of a man who gave so much to others.
Rest easy, Chief Hawthorne. Your watch is complete. We thank you for your service, your friendship, and your unwavering commitment to the Verona Fire Department. You will never be forgotten.
