Fascinating and unexpected Science for your Friday!

📣 Indiana meteor crater? Did you know that Indiana has a meteor crater? Yep! There is a 4.5 mile wide impact crater in Newton County Indiana which occurred a very long time ago! This impact crater was discovered in 1880 by a stone quarry. When mining rock, they discovered a shatter cone and significant deformation of rock formations. This has led geologist to determine this was the site of a meteor impact in our long distant past!

This site is significantly eroded to where there is no surface evidence left of this impact crater. Geologist agree that the crater structure has eroded by 980'! A combination of significant erosion and glacial till has buried the crater and any surface evidence until it was discovered by chance in 1880!
