Wapello Fire and Rescue responded to what was likely a record number of calls for service in August. We responded to a total of 56 calls for service last month. These responses included the following:

46 Medical Emergencies
3 Motor Vehicle Accidents
2 Automatic Fire Alarms
2 Automobile Fires
2 Water Rescues
1 Public Service Call

During the month, we had 18 days where we had multiple calls. The busiest days were 8/20, 8/24 and 8/30 when we had four calls each of those days. We also had five days that we has three calls in a day.

Our last call for August was our 323rd call for 2026.

It was an exceptionally busy month for Wapello Community Ambulance as well. They ended the month with 84 calls for service. The staff at both agencies, many of whom volunteer for both, are standing up to the test in a big way! We are grateful for the support of our area citizens and local governments. Stay safe folks!

At 23:41 on 8/27/26, Wapello Fire and Rescue and Wapello Ambulance were paged for a motor vehicle crash with injuries and fire on Highway 99 near the intersection of 126th Avenue in rural Wapello. Units arrived on scene to find a passenger car on its side, fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle had left the roadway, rolled, struck a tree and started on fire. The two occupants of the vehicle had self extricated prior to arrival of responding units. Fire crews extinguished the fire while EMS staff tended to the occupants. Per department policy, the identity of the occupants and their condition will not be released. Wapello Fire and Rescue units returned to base at 01:23 on 8/28/26. Also assisting with this incident were the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, Iowa State Patrol and Holmes Towing.

Last night at our monthly training meeting, members were able to practice their aerial skills and have a friendly competition with pump operations, hose deployment and water nozzles. We were able to have some fun while keeping the training interesting and engaging.

Strong work to our EMS and fire crews today. In the span of seven hours there were seven calls for service and a couple that were extremely emergent. The most remarkable thing is that six of these calls came in a span of three hours and seven minutes. That's basically a call every half-hour for three hours in an area that is 30 minutes from the nearest hospital. At one point, our crews were covering four calls at once, all with advanced life support and mostly with volunteer staff. Between Wapello Community Ambulance and Wapello Fire and Rescue, we had three ambulances, an ALS rapid response unit and a rescue unit all staffed and handling calls simultaneously in three different communities. All of this while most of our volunteers were working at their full-time jobs. That's almost unheard of in today's era of declining volunteerism across the country. Were we stretched pretty thin? Absolutely, but it is important to note that we still had multiple EMTs available and two Wapello Fire and Rescue units equipped to handle additional EMS calls if needed. This month has been exceptionally busy for both departments. We are extremely grateful for our excellent group of volunteers that continue to pour their hearts into our mission. If you see our folks around town and they don't slow down to talk, don't take it personally. They are likely hungry, sleep deprived and missing their families. If you see our units responding in every which direction, it's not because we're lost. We're just that busy. We thank the community for their ongoing support and we thank the local businesses that allow their employees to leave so they can volunteer during emergencies. We are always looking for new volunteers to help out. If you live or work in the Wapello (Louisa County) area and are interested in applying, feel free to message us for more information.

This is where we house 3 ambulances and our ALS chase truck. Since about 830am today hereโ€™s the calls we have ran: A1, A1, A2, Med1, A1, A2, A4. Thatโ€™s right 7 calls for service in 8 hours. Staffing all of them and sometimes simultaneous. Plus having Rescue 110 covered at Wapello Fire and Rescue.
Now what do you see? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
We at Wapello Ambulance see dedication and commitment to our Community and the citizens passing through. It takes a team!

The busy streak continues for our fire department and ambulance service. Weโ€™re very fortunate that many of our firefighters are also EMS providers so when multiple calls occur simultaneously we can pivot and respond to the next one with the appropriate resources and personnel. We greatly appreciate our community and all their continued support for our members!
