Throwback Thursday: Wappingers Lake was a popular spot of recreational fun for the residents of Wappingers Falls. During the winter it was a popular ice skating spot for locals and many people from out of town. Hundreds of people, young and old, were often seen ice skating and playing games on the ice. Adults, who had to work all day, were also seen skating the length of the lake at night under the moonlight. The Lions Club installed flood lights on the lake in the 1930s for night time ice skating.

The Lake also helped to supply large quantities of ice each year until about 1920. There were several ice houses built throughout the village including in homes, dairy shops, and butcher shops to help keep food frozen during the summer months. Larger ice houses were built at O’Farrell’s Point, Mill Street, and Spring Street. The ice industry helped provide work for a lot of men who were temporarily unemployed due to the weather.
