Tremont Nail Factory District and Tremont Iron Works The preservation and adaptive reuse of The Tremont Nail Factory and Nail Works Company

The Tremont Nail Factory is located in Wareham, MA and one of its plants, the Nail Works Company is located in West Wareham, MA. Being one of the first cut nail manufacturers in the United States, it could be a national historic treasure. It was listed on the National Register for Historic Places in 1976, yet the buildings have not found a new use since the company moved to Mansfield, MA. This si

te is meant to be used for community information, discussion and planning in the hopes that this site can be saved and used in a purposeful manner.

Just posted in the Wareham Village Soup. I look forward to hearing new discussion about this site.

Planning officials will seek public comment on redeveloping the former Tremont Nail Factory District, reigniting a fierce debate among residents who view the property as either a boondoggle or a fixer-upper with commercial potential.

The Tremont Nail Team has begun developing ideas for events within the Main Factory. Its a challenge since we want to keep the historic integrity of the building, yet provide a safe and inviting environment to the public. Keep posted!

A new semester, exciting challenges. The BAC/Tremont team is underway doing research about tour and museum exhibit design. Our first stop was the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum on Monday. Next week?!? The Acorn Factory where they still make Tremont Nails, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where we will interact with their exhibit designers. This is all in preparation for developing our signage/exhibit display design concept for next year's Wareham2014. We have other places we plan to visit, and we will keep you updated. Of course we can't tell you yet what our design will be -- we want to 'wow' your socks off!

The Tremont team had their first meeting down at the site today. A bit overcast and windy, but at least we were able to tour the buildings. We are so excited to be developing some design elements for next years 2014 Celebration!

Tuesday's Open House was great! The BAC has 16 real projects, one of which is Tremont. I was notified yesterday that I had eleven students who had Tremont as their first or second choice. That's pretty awesome, and I am thrilled that they want to work with us. I will know more by next Wednesday.

This Tuesday, 8/27, from 6-8pm the BAC is hosting their Gateway Open House. During this time, students will choose what pro bono project they want to work on during the Fall semester. Looking forward to meeting new students who are interested in design and preservation. We will focus on design signage and display units for next year's Summer Celebration, as well as continue drawing as-builts. See you tomorrow night folks!

So its been a few weeks since our last posting. We are getting prepared for our fall semester (did I say that?). The team is very excited to be part of next year's 2014 Summer Celebration in Wareham. Our group will be developing a signage/display unit package for Tremont Nail to be used during th4 celebration as well as future events.

We will also continue drawing as-builts of the remaining buildings. This is a long, slow tedious process, but worth it once its completed.

Look for more posts in the next few weeks and during the fall and spring semesters.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, folks!
