Folks,

We have some EXTREMELY cold temps coming our way and some horrible wind chills. During these times we typically put an extra log on the fire or build a fire to augment other heating methods. PLEASE USE CAUTION! During events like this chimney fires and structure fires are much more common. Dirty and or damaged flues are killers. Also exercise caution using portable heaters, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Be safe!

From NWS Blacksburg (Friday AM)

Good Morning,

The following is a briefing from the NWS Blacksburg office as of 6:00 AM Date: August 28th, 2020
Threats: Remnants of Laura entering the area Saturday.
Location: Entire area.
Timing: Saturday morning through Saturday evening.
Overview and Impacts:
• Tropical Depression Laura remnants will move across our area Saturday
• Flash flooding and isolated tornadoes are the main threats
• Generally 1-2" of rain expected with locally higher amounts possible, especially in the mountains
• Severe threat is mainly for isolated tornadoes, but some gusty winds are likely as well.
• Threat of tornadoes is highest east of the Blue Ridge
• Sustained winds of 10-20 mph with gusts of 20 - 40 mph will also accompany the core remnants of Laura which could result in downed trees and power lines, resulting in scattered power outages, blocked roads, and possibly structural damage. The combination of saturated soils, heavy rain, and strong winds makes this situation more likely.
