The reason I became an educator…everyone has a story.

All arrows pointed in the direction of teaching for me, but I was never the person who did what everyone else was doing (definitely not my mom who is now a retired teacher! Love you Ms Papasian!)

I actually started out teaching swimming lessons…I taught at the Warren City Pool (Warren Mott and Sterling Heights High School), Birmingham YMCA and for Hazel Park Parks and Recreation. I loved it! It always seemed like more fun than a job. That progressed into coaching for the Warren Jaguars Swim Club.

The kiddos on the Jags felt like family! I won’t name drop here, but a shout out to all of you…you know who you are! Many of their families are still my neighbors today! Mr Broadwell and I coached the team for 3 years, the kids in the team came to our wedding and released butterflies.

But with all of these warm fuzzies, I still wanted to be an artist, lawyer, even a judge! But I was asked to teach private lessons to a little boy who was in foster care. He suffered significant trauma as a toddler, the effects of which had infiltrated his social and emotional wellness.

I loved him, he was my little shining star. His light guided me and it was clear that my passion was working with children. I still think of him today….

A little more about me….let’s start in the early years.

My very first job was at the Warren City Pool. Yes friends, back in the day when it was located next to Veterans Park and was open in the summer and had bubble cover in the winter!

I worked for Gerry Slaght from age 16-20 doing a variety of jobs including: lifeguard, swim instructor, custodian, assistant director…and the not so great tasks of hand/foot checker, parking lot security and we won’t even talk about what was happening when the pool was cleared and the little styrofoam cups came out.

I am proud to say, working for Warren Parks and Recreation was one of the most impactful experiences I had as a teenager. I met so many lifelong friends and even met my husband there! I learned the values of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Believe me…the cleaning and lifeguarding skills I learned are still with me today. Anyone who visited knows that shiny stainless steel and immaculately clean pool gutters are where it’s at!

Today I sending a shout out to all of you who worked, visited or even just remember the original Warren City Pool😊

Welcome to my page! I am excited to announce that I am running for my third term on WCS Board of Education this November!

A little about me…..
I am married to Ross Broadwell, you may be thinking that name sounds familiar. If so, you could actually know him from the years he spent coaching kids on WVAC or WYSL. We have been married for 23 years and have three amazing children. Lucy is a WMHS/MMSTC 2020 graduate, she is attending MSU (Lyman Briggs) majoring in pre med. Sam is a WMHS senior who will graduate in 2023, he is a varsity football, wrestling, golf and track athlete. Sam is also a member of Peer to Peer and National Honors Society. Aggie is a WMHS sophomore, she is on the cheer team and swim team and is learning to drive….watch out!!

Now that you know a bit about my favorite people I will end tonight on this positive note. Stay tuned!

PS You may be wondering what connects you to a local election that may not pertain to you at all. Well…I am here to share with you that it does! If you share my page, talk to family and friends who live in Warren/Sterling Heights/Troy or even just get a good laugh or some inspiration you are here for the right reason!

Yours Truly,
MPB
