Take a trip to the forest this weekend and attend the 21st annual Kinzua Heritage Arts and Music Festival on Fox Hill Rd. Elk Township Historical Society is focused on keeping history alive for generations to come, and that’s exactly what creator and owner of this festival, Scott Mead does, as well. Talented artisans and craftsmen from all over demonstrate crafts essential to surviving many years ago:
spinning,weaving, blacksmithing, leatherwork, bee keeping, Native American jewelry and much more. Add in music, Native American dancers, great food, and it will entertain you whole family! Don’t miss it!

Meet Brianna Gage, a beautiful young woman, and new entrepreneur, in our area. She is the proud owner of Tree and Tine…wear the wilderness. She spends hours foraging in nature to find the perfect things to use in creating her wearable art out of found treasures such as: antlers, pinecones, feathers, twigs, tree bark and more. Her pieces are unique and stunning. She has an artist’s eye, when it comes to creating her line of jewelry and hair adornments. Her one of a kind bark baskets are magnificent and it takes her a week to make…just one. Brianna’s husband Austin, grew up next door to us, here in Elk Township. His parents/step-parents all live in Scandia, as well. Austin and Brianna are building a house on Peterson Rd., so sometime in the next year, they will be residents in our community. They have an adorable daughter, Skye! Brianna is set up at the Heritage Festival on Fox Hill Rd. this weekend. Take time to attend the festival, and check out her awesome selection of nature art. Her smile will welcome you into her booth. Congratulations, Brianna!

Ladies Tuesday Time Out was awesome! Hoping to pick up a few new neighbors and friends to join us. We worked on projects for the nursing homes. We are still in need of a few pairs of old demin jeans AND any old camouflage pants you may have lying around. We’ll meet again in two weeks! Hot beverages and treats are always on tap!

BIG NEWS! ETHS Wednesday Women is no more! Now we have Ladies' Tuesday Time 0ut! To accommodate the requests to change from getting together on Wednesdays, we will now congregate on Tuesdays! The 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 1 o'clock. Please join us, we welcome all area women. Our concentration will be on completing service projects. If you know of a group or organization that could benefit from our efforts, please let us know.

Future Scandia firefighters are hanging out at Blueberry Hill Golf Club, with their parents who are giving out hot dogs to the 39 teams playing in the annual golf tournament to benefit Scandia VFD. Thank you Tim and Mary Conklin for getting this event started, thanks to Blueberry for hosting, thanks golfers for paying the entry fee to play, thanks to the local area businesses, who sponsor the 18 holes and many thanks to Melody Rulander, for chairing the event. She does an amazing job! It takes major funds and hard-working volunteers to keep a healthy fire department in Elk Township! AND…SVFD is celebrating SIXTY years of service in our beautiful community! Please take time to say thank you!

W/C Fair Update - Our local 4-H girls, Haley, Maddie and Loren Ferrie are shown with their oxen. These girls work so hard to control these large animals. Check out all their ribbons. Loren won two memorial plaques, in addition to others…they honor her great grandfather and former resident, Pat Ferrie (deceased). Congratulations, Girls!

Dr. Julie Boozer wrote a fabulous book of her family history called THE OLSSON VIKING SAGA in 2005 tracing her maternal family’s history from Sweden to Elk Township. She spent years researching records, even going to Sweden for more! Their homestead started out a small Quaker log cabin on the property on Peterson Rd. Her great grandparents, Eva Charlotta and Charles Erickson build the original log home there in 1873, to house their growing family. It was built from hand hewn logs, mortised and pegged. The Quaker barn remained on the property after the first little cabin was burned down, when the farmhouse was complete. Additions were added to the barn and much remodeling took place throughout the years on the farmhouse. Hand-cut massive stone are still in place in the basement today, just as Charles, a stone mason placed them. Julie grandparents, Ida Helen and John Theodore Palmer lived there a short time, but had to sell the homestead, as they couldn’t afford the taxes. A few years later, Julie’s uncle, Merrill purchased the property back for the family in 1937. He in turned deeded over the property with the house and barn to Julie’s mother and father…Marguerite and Dr. Fenner Lindbloom in 1951, in exchange for dental work. It’s not clear if they continued to live there full time, or used it for a summer home and resided in Jamestown, near his practice. Dr. Fenner loved stonework, and took two summers to create a a native stone fireplace and chimney, still in existence today. Stay tuned for part 2.
